I think you are just lacking in depth so adding something with a pattern would be best.

I would lower the TV and take all away from your entertainment center and put a low vase, box or even a small plant if enough light. Get new light colored drapes or even just sheers unless you have a lot of sun coming in. On the couch wall, lower the art work, put the floor lamp in the corner and get an end table with a lamp on it for the other end of your couch. Get rid of the plant in the corner....doesn't look too healthy to me. Then when you can, get two matching chairs...one where your one chair is now and put one facing it....swivel would be nice so that person sitting there could watch TV. You could put a small end table by the chair in the window and the other chair could use the end table at the end of the couch. I do love your ottoman and if you had a colorful throw on it and colorful pillows on your couch you room would be very nice.

I think you have a great start in your room; modern and clean. Few tweaks for texture and contrast and you are good. I would suggest in order of priority:

1. Drapes. Replace w/off white double width panels.

2. Move the throw from the cocktail ottoman. Place the throw on left arm or corner of sofa. Place a large tray on the ottoman for drinks/ etc. Metal or off white leather etc.

3. Big in design right now are rugs over rugs (trust me, this is true). A sheepskin rug in off white under your ottoman would look great. Add two large pillow of same on sofa in each corner and remove the squared arm pillows to soften.

4. Prints. Easy to replace using existing frames. Looks like 8x10? Take some pics and order some prints off shutter fly (w/coupon of course). You could mix up and do some in color and some in sepia or black/white---think of architectural items in your area or perhaps those you already have in your photo library.

5. Move the plant to the left corner for better balance.

6. Move the floor lamp from side of leather chair to left of couch so it is paired with matching mate (lamp on each end of your sofa). This will give more symmetry to your room and eliminate the eye stop it creates in current location.

7. Add inexpensive metal drink size table between chair and sofa.

Another question, does it feel too off balance because the left of the room is sort of dark and the right is light ? If I get the white linen drapes, what pillows do I get ? The ones on the pic were just stuff I was trying but didn't like them.

This is a crazy idea, BUT, for practically no cost, I've seen beautiful scrapbook paper squares in modern prints that are nice enough to be framed. And they are usually a dollar. Also, 8x10 prints are readily available and very reasonably priced. YES, you need to add some color in those frames above the sofa. I'd add some color in the new drapes, a soft subtle print - not white. Your taste seems very modern, not quite elegant. I'm glad to hear one of you say it is back in style to put a rug over a rug!! I've been wanting to do that in my living room, to give it a dose of needed color.

Thanks no. I'm not in to color as you may have guessed and can't seem to find pillows that go well. I think once I change the drapes (ordering some nice linen ones asap), it may be easier to decide. Given the items i have, what type of side table would you choose ? What would you do with the tv console ? I so appreciate your feedback!!!

I think on the console you could use some height to left of tv--- is tv at a good height for couch viewing? assume it is. I think a light source on wall to left of TV would really be a nice balance and add some ambient light--could do a hanging lantern sconce with battery op candle...I could see a picture ledge over TV w/leaning frames in white/linen. I will search for pics.

imhofan had it right. Not everyone likes a lot of color. It just needs some tweaks.

I too think you have a good start. I like the pillow on your sofa but would consider adding a light colored tray to the ottoman in an off white snakeskin or alligator with a gold orb or something along those lines on it,

along with an off white linen drape as opposed to white. Instead of the vase with sticks, use a tall white vase or sculpture also incorporating the off white along with a little of the gold or brass from your lamps. Something like this might be pretty.

Just bring in some creams/texture, maybe a little silver/gold or glass decor.

I have a few suggestions, some more budget friendly than others:

In a room this size, it can be helpful to have all walls alike. When it comes time to repaint ( I would prioritize this, were it me), look for a grey with a blue undertone, so that it melds with the sofa. That lowered contrast is helping to keep the room looking more spacious, and is a good thing to keep. Take a cushion to the paint store, and don't be afraid to ask for assistance.

Black piping around your existing drapes can be done by a professional seamstress, and will add some needed weight to the drapery, and will help carry a touch of black to that side of the room -very elegant.

Having lowered the contrast thus far, look for items in high contrast to punctuate - the metallic vase mentioned above is a good example. A cream mohair shawl against the velvet ottoman would also stand out and give some more lush texture. Adding a tray is fine, but look for something tall and glass/lucite to place on it.

The artwork is just too much. Take some time to find something that speaks to you as well as it fills the space. You have some many hard lines that something softer is called for here. Could be an abstract. Could be a kimono. :)

I am less concerned with the carpet than others here, but I would like to see the thing centered properly. Work to get it under the console and sofa with roughly the same amount of border involved. Try the chair diagonally in the corner. Before you decide to replace the rug, try ravaging it first with paint or dye.

It is time to make a gift of the money plant. It asked me to tell you that.

Velvet, mohair, mongolian wool and leather can all work for new cushions. Try some mixing and matching at your local Homegoods to get started.

Lastly, and when budget provides, I would like to see you find a large, masculine chandelier, hung lower and directly over the ottoman ( great piece, by the way).

Thanks so very much. These are all great ideas. I'm unable to send pics of some of the changes I have already made as per suggestions because I'm away this weekend. But really do appreciate the help and will re-read many times to see what's feasible. I'm not against spending $$$ on the right items - I had a great livingroom before and probably messed it up. The plant was lushious but lots of wind made it fall and I had to trim it (and did so poorly ) but agree that it looks sad as is ;)

I agree. Pick photos that you love and forget about "artist" paintings. If you love the painting, then go with it. We, the posters on Houzz can easily sit back and type to do this, or do that, but in the end, you have to love it. For me, I've blown up and framed photos from trips which feature architecture because I love architecture. Do what you love.

One more thing - and this is my personal opinion - I'm not crazy about the square bolster pillows. With a square sofa and ottoman, I would select round. Mix up the shapes a bit, IMO. But really, as I wrote before, you have a great place already. All it needs is a little tweaking. Best of luck to you.

The room feels very flat, you need more texture. That seems to be the issue. You can add it in a variety of ways. Here are some of the items in designs of ours that might help your space:

You room needs something circular in it; the ottoman would be better round. I would try the floor lamps on either end of the sofa, and find a round table and round lamp to go to the left of the lounge chair, maybe brass lamp with textured shade. Lucite small end tables on either end of sofa could work too; again round.

Good job, celerygirl. I know someone mentioned a tray on the ottoman, but somehow that just does not seem practical in this room. It seems more like a 'chill' space to me - I could be wrong.
