Something/one ate the tops off of my baby avocado trees

So this summer when I opened up the compost bin I found 6 avocado tree saplings growing and decided to plant them, I quickly discovered that they didn't like direct sunlight and moved them to the side of my house where they were all flourishing. You can imagine my shock when I woke up one morning and the tops of all of my trees were missing. It looked liked someone came by with garden shears and clipped off the tops of each tree as the cuts were so perfect. There was no evidence of any kind left behind so I'm hoping someone has an idea as to what animal might be responsible?
