Something ate all my tomatoes including tops of plants

This morning I went to check and water my container plants. I had many greenies among the 7 or 8 plants. Now they're 95% gone. Then I noticed the TOPS of the plants themselves had been eaten off, too. At first I thought 'hornworm,' but the stems were chewed off, and all of my plants were eaten from the top.

I'm pretty devastated. Wow, wiped out in one night! I can only guess it's deer. About 6 weeks ago, I was gardening where the plants are now. I heard a whoosh, and three baby deer zoomed past me (almost hit me!), apparently running from something. I have had something eat my first tomatoes in the past, but never all of them, and never the plants as well. And after the initial raid of a few maters, it stopped. I'm in a suburban neighborhood.

Has anyone else had this problem? I'm wondering if they're (deer or otherwise) going to come back regularly. All that work..
