Autumn Colors

For the Canadians interested,the Hal.Highlands leaves are now starting to turn.

The soft maple,with their brilliant reds & burgundy colors are slowly coming about.

The poplar,which is usually a brilliant yellow have mostly lost their leaves with the last rain/wind.

Birch and beech are now turning the yellow as well,and the hard maple,which turns orange,has started.

Oak,which is always that brown you see thru the yellow and oranges,turned about a month ago,and have stayed brown.

The oak is the first to have leaves,and the last to lose them.

So,with that said,if you are up to a trip "north",the next week or 2 should give you the show that you are desiring.

We were in Barrie yesterday and I don't drive the 401 to 400 if I can avoid it. So though Alliston, Cookstown, etc. No colours. A number were very pale brown and had fallen. Alliston etc has perfect hills to see the colours and there were none. Nothing in Barrie either. Oh well, it will come, just late this year.

I love living in Northern California- but I sure do miss having four glorious seasons. Enjoy the beautiful show.

hey down here in adrian MI .... we had 10 weeks of drought.. with ridiculous heat all thru the nights ... what was you weather this summer .... how was it different from other years .... and are we dealing with recent transplants or fully established tree???? and what might have been different with these trees this year ??? .. like you quit watering the lawn ... etc ... as far as i am concerned.. fall color is variable year to year .... and many in the tree forum agree ... ken ps: my cleveland select also has all its leaves.. whereas many other trees shed them early, prior to color change ... and it is waiting for that first hard frost.. when every leaf will fall off as the sun starts warming them after that freeze ... probably within an hour...whoomph ....

R. rugosa alba turns a gorgeous, pure yellow to go with big fat red hips. Hansa also turns a fabulous yellow, but a warmer color tinged with red. Frau Dagmar Hastrup--mostly yellow, some red. All my rugosas (including Martin Frobisher) show some color--alba and Hansa are the best, tho. James Mason, a gallica, also gets nice color. As does R. glauca. Deutsche Danzig got very nice color for me last year as a new plant (including stems turning red)--I'm waiting to see if it does the same this year. Here' R. rugosa alba. Imagine an entire 6-foot plant looking like this:

They grow very slowly and are borderline hardy. That and Katsura are the only trees that outright died this winter. Might be worth a try in a protected spot. They consistently have deep maroon to red fall color. I’m growing two musclewood trees as specimens. Their muscular wood should be appreciated up close. They are selected cultivars and have great red fall color. Faster growing when young. If your soil ph is over 7 you’ll need to find something adapted to alkaline soils If you want that vibrant red. The reds aren’t as vibrant for those who prefer acidic soil.

It's an Ichi-Ki-Kei-Jiro Asian Persimmon Tree. I bought and planted it about 15 years ago. It's the easiest fruit tree to maintain since it needs very little or no pruning, no insecticide or fungicide sprays, and pests don't bother it at all, no insects and not even the squirrels. It has a very sweet tropical flavor even when hard as a rock, never astringent. After 15 years it's maximum height is stable at about 14 feet.

Interesting that the order if very different than it was in Maine in the Mt Washington Valley. There, the brilliant reds were first, then the oranges, and the last were the brilliant yellows. I think I might have loved them the best as they were always against a slate gray winter sky and SO welcome with everything being browns and grays. Right now, it prime "Leaf Peeper" season, it would be the various shades of oranges.

yes,very late this year Jas....but some have to realize,where I am,we still had a couple feet of snow in May...so,in reality,the leaves ares't really "late"......most,if not all of the maples(near me,this is) are still pretty green....just so odd.

Yes, I posted a pic of our street the other day, and everything is green, green green. Usually the maples are brilliant, but not yet.

We'll be raking with snow on the ground, probably :-)
