are silk plants out of style for 2017
Comments (34)"I guess I should be glad they weren't plastic!" Yep, not at all attractive indoors and even worse outside!! And, yes, I DO see plastic flowers here and there used to "decorate" an outdoor plant bed. As a gardener myself (and a landscape designer), I find that rather abhorrent!! The only faux plants I can tolerate are the lighted stems that are really more of a light feature to me than a plant - no leaves, just bare 'twigs' that end with a tiny LED light. Lots of times you can find just bare branches for sale at craft stores or nurseries - contorted willow branches are common and look beautiful indefinitely. I have a large collection of living houseplants I use and there are some that require only minimal care and tolerate low lighting. And they are good for air purification in the house. I also always have fresh cut flowers in the house - it is my one big indulgence and they get replaced weekly. Not all that pricey either.......$5-10 I would otherwise spend on a coffee or two or something else equally as unnecessary. And they are such a huge enjoyment. I also think that blooming orchids are a great decorative touch and dead easy to grow as well. Most don't require strong light or frequent watering and the blooms last for months. Trader Joe's always has a large, inexpensive assortment, as does my local Safeway, and I consider them to be just a very long lasting bouquet of (un)cut flowers :-) I don't care if I can't keep them alive forever - 3-4 months and often longer of enjoyment for $20 bucks or less is to me more than worth it....See MoreBlue / White Cabinets - New Kitchen 2017!
Comments (20)I know this is well over a year since you did those cabinets but I wanted to thank you for all the research you did to find that color. I am going to be using it to do a kitchen island in an ocean front condo. I'm still undecided whether to do all the lowers in the same color or go with the white I'm planning for the tops. What I'd like to know is what finish you used? The kitchen I'm doing is east facing with ceiling to floor windows that has all day sun due to the ocean/sun reflection and I'm not sure about the finish I should use. Any responses will be greatly appreciated. By the way, we purchased the condo to be used as a vacation rental so durability is a must....See MoreHow can I bring my home to current style without changing furniture?
Comments (25)Your house is not dated. It looks fresh, and there are only a few tweaks I see, as others have noted. Something more colorful for rugs. The overhead lights could be switched out for more flair. I'd find a single art piece for behind the sofa, something with a bit more drama - I was going to say color, but if you'd prefer, a black and white piece would go there well, if it stood out more. I am NOT one for low artwork behind furniture - but in this case with that window above, I think the art does call for being lower. (Why I am not, generally-speaking, a fan? 1) Navel-height art fails to appeal to me, and 2) people leaning back on couches will likely bang or brush their heads on the art.) I'd switch the two chairs in the living room. Stair railing: I am fine with it as is, or stain it a bit darker (do not paint). As for paint color for the walls - nothing ever looks the same on a monitor as in person, but what you already have appears to work (and you'd be doing a LOT of painting if you do decide to change the color. Get samples, paint a board or spare bit of sheet rock. I like the fish tank - painting that might be worthwhile....See MoreAre white cabinets going out of style? What are more common kitchen t
Comments (99)White Shaker cabinets are timeless and beautiful, as are white subway tile with black black grout. What is NOT timeless and beautiful are trendy expensive items like farmhouse apron sinks, black faucets, glass tile etc...anything that makes it clear the exact year the renovation was done. If you want trendy, stick to items easily replaced, like drawer pulls and knobs, pictures, even paint. Plain slab cabinet doors with hidden pulls look like a dentist's office...it's a kitchen, not a surgical suite. FYI: All those kitchens are way too busy, way too much going on, especially in the backsplashes, and the idea of a white kitchen floor is laughable. And please stop making a big deal out of the range hood which for some reason has become the focus of the room!...See Morebfogg1253
