Hello. It is difficult to advise you something without photo of your room.

The tables and blue chair may be darkening the room a bit (if the wood has a dark walnut color to it). How dark is the tan on your walls?

Like others said, a photo would be helpful, since I can't really say where in the room would work to put a light. Recessed lighting works well, but I've always found it a bit cold and impersonal. You could use it for extra lighting, but I think there should be a main light fixture that adds character to the room. I don't think pendant lights would look right in your living room.

I would consider a small chandelier or a hybrid between a pendant and flush-mounted light. I don't know how high your ceilings are. Also, track lighting which is focused on lighting the fireplace area would look really nice.

AND, if possible, a couple electric "candles" in the windows would add warmth to the room at night, if you have a place to put some. Where I live, people keep them up year-round, not just for Christmas. It makes your home inviting from the outside and inside. If you don't have a suitable window ledge, there are some that are held in place by the sash.

Finally, do yo have any table lamps? Or are you only relying on floor lamps?

And the light in the corner is a plant light for the plant in the corner. We don't get much light!

As you can see, the stain on the floor is quite dark.

The plant light (and the scraggly plant) need to go. The chairs need to be repositioned, one on either end of the couch, facing each other across a coffee table. You need to add a light colored rug, I'd say natural jute or sisal, that will lighten up the floor.

Put a console table under the window by the front door with a lamp on each end. Then. a floor lamp to the left of the fireplace.

Clear that mantel. Way too much little junk up there. And you need bigger art over the sofa; it should cover about 2/3 of the wall and be lowered to 5 - 8" over the back of the sofa.

I would drop high hats (pot lights) in a random pattern in the ceiling - use dim-able LED's with dimmer switches.

I agree that I think part of the problem is the gro-light, actually. That dark purple tint makes the whole room feel dark, especially because it draws attention to the fact that the plant isn't getting much natural light. When I put my finger over the plant and light in your photos, the room suddenly feels lighter than before.

I'm actually a little confused why the room isn't brighter since there seems to be plenty of light coming through the window. I think the flooring and furniture are the main problems. Lighter furniture with a light area rug would do the trick, I think.

How about a big pretty mirror. I like all the other suggestions too.
