I think the look is really cute or handsome as the case may be. I unknowingly made the mistake of using roving that had some wool in it that won't thrum. Be sure you have sheep wool to avoid that problem.

Yes I know about the so called roving that yarn companies call roving. It is mostly acrylic with a little wool that won't thrum. Real roving is 100% wool. I bought my roving on Etsy and it is 100% Marino wool.

dowlinggram, does the thrumming slow you down? I like the idea of warmer mittens, but wonder if it isn't tedious. Thanks!

It is a lot of work but worth it. They are done on 4 needles. First you have to make all the thurms because the roving comes in a fat cord. You tear off a piece and separate it into strands about 5 or 6 inches long and the thickness of the 100% wool yarn you are using. You bring the ends together and roll it between your fingers to make a sort of bow shape. Then you can use it to knit. I do this while I'm watching a movie or favorite show on TV. Yes it does slow the knitting a bit on the thrum row but not by much. You place a thrum every 4th stitch on every 4th row and that is easy when they are all made. You insert the needle and place the thurm over the needle and bring both the stitch and thrum through. On the next row you knit the thrum and stitch together to lock the thrum in, then 2 rows of plain knitting.
