Have large number of Agave americana

Hi All,

I have a bunch of these growing in my front yard. I don't like them and want to replace them with other plants. I hate to destroy them. What do you think is the best way to handle this?

The small ones I could dig and trade in this forum by mail as usual. The large ones are several feet in diameter.

Anyone in the Dallas TX area that want to come dig some large plants? I think they are worth several hundred dollars each.

Your local plant exchange may take them as donations for their annual plant swaps. It's what I plan to do with plants leftover from trades here.

darn wish i lived in texas! i think thats a first....no offense =)

i would trade you something for some small ones by mail.
my plants for trade list and seed list is pretty short these days since most of my seed is in deep storage in california, but i do have some things to trade.

various types of seed - violas, violets, hostas, strawberries, peaches, plums

+

curly willow, some rooted, many cuttings

lace cap hydrangea, rooted cuttings

elephant ears hosta

varigated hosta

mimosa seeds

I have one for several years. My large mother plant died of rot but I was lucky it had a small pup. Pictured with Aloe that was given to me. It never produced pups and the one time it did, rot got to it. I left it out too late in fall with too much rain and cold. It is slow growing. Stush

Cactus McHarris: Well, if it is going to make the plant ugly, then I will leave it be. @GermanStar: The plant is still a baby; I purchased at it Lowe's which sold it as agave Americana. Eventually the plant will have to be planted outdoors, but since it's a slow-growing plant it will be some time before that's necessary. In the meantime, we enjoy its presence in our living room.

They will grow rapidly in open run. A large pot would help establish roots, then plant in the ground, hold up water in the winter, and give them all they want when it warms up. I have seen these get sunburned as well and leaves frozen. So don't let water sit on the leaves. If too cold when you first transplant it may be in trouble. Wait until Spring and don't take a chance. We don't know where you live but by your 7b information I would judge that it is rather cold right now. Well rooted plants do well, however caution should be taken if roots are not developed yet. hey cool. you know, maybe you should sell the bigger ones on ebay.

you know that always sounds so easy but then its like actually a chore, but it would at least make it worth yer while to dig em up.
