AdBlockPlus is a free app that can be found in Chrome's add-ons.

Antivirus doesn't defend against adware. You will need something very specific to adware. I use https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/ but here's bitdefenders version if you are more comfortable with them: https://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/adware-removal-tool-for-pc.html

Adblock Plus or Ublock Origin both work well in my experience. Both are free.

Ust a comment here from recent experience- I instslled adblock plus 2 months ago. LOVED IT --- until I looked at my data usage- Holy Crap!!! It uses more data by itself than everything else combined! I had to remove it. as I was hitting almost 15gb total- I am normally a 3-4 gb user! It was the heaviest data consumption when I looked in my data usage settings.

I use way to much data on my laptop. I use Firefox with adblock & no script. Should I not be using adblock? I need to use as little as possible since limited data is all I have available here. How do you check how much data everything is using?

Terrimi- I use an android. Go to settings/data/useage. There will be a time frame and how much data you used. You msy need to reset the timeframe to whatever yourcmonthly billing cycle is. Then there is a place to click on to automatically reset that time frame every month. Hope this helps with whatever. type of device you are using.

Terri, data consumption really only matters if you use it on cellular data. If its just home wifi, then its not a big concern unless you have a fairly small data plan. Most home internet is 250gb to 1tb, vs a handful of GB on your data plan.

I know that some people have reported increased data usage when using AdBlock, but the reality for most people is that it cuts down a lot on data usage because it prevents those data-heavy ads from loading. It's true that AdBlock increases your memory usage a bit because it sits there in the background waiting to intercept ads, but that's just the memory, not the usage. Some studies have shown that about half of all data usage is the dang ads that load up if you are not using a blocker, so an ad blocker should be generally helpful.

Where did you get those high usage numbers from?...an app, or did you confirm it with your ISP? If you are using a data usage monitoring app, it would likely show high AdBlock use as everything that is filtered through the app could be identified as AdBlock, but the actual usage could be much lower. I'm not saying you're wrong, but something else might be going on here other than what you think.

ISP? No, because shes not using her home ISP. She using a wireless Carrier (yes, basically the same thing, but generally called isp for home internet, and wireless carrier for cellular). And while it may not be exact depending on it being set correctly, it should be in the same ballpark. I know mine are generally close. According to her (from her phone), she went from 3-4 to 15 gb of data usage which is pretty significant. Even if its off by a couple gigs, thats still unacceptable to most. If by removing the app it goes back down, well that should be pretty cut and dry where the usage comes from and that there is a usage issue. That said, if it were my phone, I would try restricting the cellular data on that app and see if it had any adverse affects on usage. If not, use it that way. If it does, try another app. If they all substantially increase data consumption, then there is possibly an issue with the phone software, or specific app on the phone.

It will be 1 month of use this month on 1/22 without the adware. I have used 10Gb. Since I started with Straight Talk- due to the poor connectivity problem with both Verizon and then Metropcs I now have great signal due to ST using three different carrier towers. But it seems ST uses alot more data than the other carriers. A friend who uses ST also thinks there is more data used by the carrier. I may try a different adware. The Adware Plus just ate up data.

Adblock Plus with Google Chrome works well on my desktop computer. Not sure about android phone as i dont do surfing at all except FB and messenger as time permits when away form home wifi- dont have adblock plus installed on phone. Verizon services and have the smallest prepaid plan of gb's. have never even gone over 2gb in a month. but then again i dont surf much on phone.

My son reinstalled W7 on desktop and wow, was i getting the popups. I couldnt remember which extension was using til i read Adblock plus somewhere...what a wonderful big difference...
