One piece sink and countertop in master bath

We are considering installing an integrated sink with the countertop material for ease of cleaning and streamline look.

What are the pros and cons of this type of design vs. a separate countertop and undermount sink?

What materials to use?

They are JUNK. Get a solid surface top with an under mounted porcelain sink. It will last for DECADES. It is beyond easy to clean as well.

Corian is somewhat better for integrated...... but the lack of gloss on the sink will leave behind every toothpaste spatter and hair. So do as above. : )

That hasn't been our experience, Jan. We have one in each of the bathrooms in our Caribbean island house. The first one we got some years ago. I think Crane made it, and it has held up well, although not sure it's made anymore. The second one we got last year. It's made by Kohler and is porcelain, I think. Could be ceramic.

By the way, Irma blew our roofs off, but apparently both sink tops are just fine, in spite of falling debris and 225 mph winds. Not a bad recommendation!

thx nancy! that gives me positive hope - not just my 'wishful' hope. he was fine when we were doing the dirt pad out front - or seemed to be his regular 'ol self! we noticed a few changes when we moved his pen (now called 'man cave'). I attributed that to several things - the change, he was then away from his sister on her trips out to potty (they were within ft of each other before) and I was out there each time and walked over to give him hugs etc. and he was penned in so I thought he just didn't like that! after about 2 wks I started cabling him again on the outer side of the man cave - he could go in...or out. I did that for several hrs in the evening hoping it would help him adjust. and of course, the heat here now! ugh! and he took to flipping his pool over so water would go all over the ground and then he'd lie in the mud. I didn't like that (he'd never been so dirty!) but figured if it cooled him I'd deal with it. prior to the pen change he was as active and ornery as he was when he was a pup. my sister said the same thing last night - that she didn't think he was ever gonna age and then boom! he is acting more alert today. not getting up tho. he did try to get up and bark at a worker - it was a sad sounding bark! I'm gonna spend some time tonight raking some of the stones in there over to the sides so he doesn't have to sleep on a bed of stone.

Nancy, that’s really beautiful!!! We have two bathrooms with walnut vanities and our kitchen island (with an under mount sink) is walnut. All are coated with Waterlox like Nancy’s. One of the bathrooms is shared daily by our three teenaged boys, it has a sink that sort of sits on the top, not quite a vessel sink though. The other bathroom is our main floor powder room and has a vessel sink on it, it also gets a lot of daily use because we are a larger, homeschooling family. With the Waterlox, water damage is just not an issue. The boys’ bathroom is almost 4 years old, the powder room is about 2.5 years old, and the kitchen island is about a year and a half old now... zero water damage. Now, the boys’ bathroom does have some cosmetic damage to the vanity... they got some kind of bleach product on it. It hasn’t compromised the protective finish, but it has made it look cloudy there. (Waterlox tells you that bleach is a no no) I plan to refinish it after they all move out (boys are currently 17, 17, and 18). The powder room vanity did get some minor damage once, I had some foo-foo all natural liquid hand soap that was basically the same color as the wood and a big glob of it dripped onto the wood and ate right through the finish... (I think it was there for a few days before I noticed it) I do not know what ingredient caused it to do that, but I lightly sanded the area and did a spot treat touchup with more Waterlox and you really can’t tell there was ever an issue. (And now we only use foamy soap in there.) The kitchen island has a “patina.” It gets little scratches... sometimes I touch it up... it’s a very well used countertop. So, as you can see, it’s not a maintenance free surface, but water damage really isn’t a concern. Fwiw, I do not plan to use a wood vanity when we remodel our master bathroom... I use a lot of products in my daily routine, and I just don’t want to worry about where I set my flat iron or whether or not a new facial mask I might try will react poorly to the Waterlox or not. But I do still adore all three of my other Walnut countertops! Here are a couple of pictures, one of my kitchen, and the other showing part of my powder room vanity. Thanks for asking Kerrica. With the pandemic, we have been in limbo. Our bathroom is torn apart, prepped and ready to go as soon as things open up. We've decided to go with Taj Mahal quartzite for the counters and a "wood" porcelain tile for the floor. We want to extend the floor tile into the shower with a linear drain. I have to agree with others that, if we go with a natural stone for the counters we should go with a natural stone in the shower, However, I'm having a hard time finding something that goes well with the Taj. We're thinking of using large tiles to avoid too much grout. Slabs for the shower seem too expensive and have too many installation problems. Any suggestions on shower tile would be most appreciated! We are open to other flooring options if it would go better with the shower tile.

Kohler makes a limited number of cast iron vanity tops and there are also one piece vitreous China vanity tops. There is also Swanstone.

I have one top that is Corian with a Corian sink because I needed custom sizing. I picked one that's not trying to mimic anything. No extra problems with toothpaste over any other sink but we don't leave toothpaste or spit sitting in any sink, no matter what they are made of.

We have them in all the bathrooms because those were the options from the builder (our is Corian). They are ok, but I wouldn't install them now. It looks cheap..you can tell that it's not real stone.

You may want to post on the "Bathroom" forum.
I don't think it necessarily looks "cheap;" it depends on the materials. I have seen poured concrete trough sinks and integrated sinks made from natural stone (marble or travertine). Stone and concrete are porous; and the installation would be expensive. The photo below is of a bathroom in a $7M home. I don't know what material was used to make the sink. The walls are glass tile and the floor is a porcelain or ceramic penny-round tile.

I have a Kohler enameled cast iron one. It's not cheap and it doesn't look cheap. It's a maintenance dream, as far as bathroom counters and sinks go.

I had them in my previous house and miss them! Great for cleaning and very durable. My parents home had them also.. went 20 years before renovating after building and they were all in perfect shape when replaced (just finally outdated style). I think if you can achieve the look you want from a design standpoint there is no downside from a practical/usage standpoint.
