pros and cons of otr/otc microwave
Comments (5)I remodeled my small galley kitchen and decided to switch from my otc microwave to an otr one, and I am very happy with my decision. Having such a small kitchen, I now have the added advantage of more counterspace. As to your questions: 1. I don't find it difficult to use the OTR while cooking on my stovetop, and have never gotten any "burned" feeling from boiling pots on the stove while inserting or removing things from the microwave. 2. I'm a tall woman at 5'8", and in my case the otr is just above my eye level and works well for me. I suppose that could be modified a bit for each individual's needs, however there is a minimun amount of space that each otr manufacturer suggests should exist between the bottom of the microwave and the cooktop. Of course, if your wife is very petite, I suppose she could use a kitchen step ladder if she has to. 3. My otr has a circulating vent on the bottom, and I have found that it does NOT get greasy easily, and is very easy to clean. Hope this helps!...See MoreAddition: roof pitch options? (pros/cons?)
Comments (13)Option 1 we've covered. Option 2 is ok IF main roof and new roof are continous and pitch doesn't change. Except change of style in front, option 4 is very similar to the way I did mine several years ago and there hasn't been a problem. Peak (aka ridge) in option 4 must start at least a few feet up from edge of main roof. Change of style at front will be fine only if the dormer pitch doesn't meet wall on main house. You can't use enough flashing and tar to prevent leaks if it does. Dormer should be positioned away from main wall so that new roof run's continuesly along wall from peak to drip. Close attention must be given to flashing high side of chimney. I won't try and give you step by step but instead tell you to make certain roofer know's what he's doing. If the person framing and decking isn't one and same as applying shingles, have roofer give instructions on how frameing, decking and flashing should meet wall and chimney. Framer/decker is in best position to install most flashing at wall and chimney. I'm a huge fan of crickets on high side of chimney, esp if there is a large expanse of run off above. Option 5 might be having new ridge hit old wall a foot or more below drip of old roof if measurments work. As stated earlier for best appearance pitch is best maintained throughout if it can be done without interfering with pratical considerations. Shingle mfgr reps are a good source to bounce drawings off of before construction if you have doupts....See MorePros/Cons to Painting Exterior Brick White
Comments (30)One of the greatest cautions to painting brick is that the paint, if not carefully selected can trap water and moisture in the wall assembly, causing deterioration to the brick and mortar and adjacent wall construction. This is especially true for historic and older structures where softer bricks and mortar, solid masonry construction, or veneer walls without modern cavity detailing and weeps, where paint could drastically and negatively effect the wall system. Similarly a wall that is showing signs of deterioration should not be painted as that means that water is already getting into the wall and can be trapped further with paint. The hardness of modern bricks, mortars, and cavity wall detailing has made this less of an issue in new construction, but it is still something of which everyone should be aware. It's something that would be worth discussing with the brick and paint manufacturers to make sure that the two are a good match both for durability and for maintaining the appropriate level of breathability....See MoreDoes this forum need moderators? Comments (27)Rave Smith - I hope you come back and see this comment. I was not making any comment on your use of "paper tiger" as being rude or disgusting. I was trying to figure out what other folks were trying to refer to without being flagged. I thought you were giving a hint, but I still couldn't figure it out and thought you could be more specific. I didn't think you were being rude. At all. I apologize if you misunderstood my meaning in my second post - it had nothing to do with you. At all. I was referring to name calling happening in other forums by other people. (I think the term "paper tiger" is a perfectly useful and descriptive phrase. I suppose it was once considered rude, but those days are long gone.)...See MoreRina
