Tree/Shrub Identification

This tree/shrub was found in Brisbane suburbs. There is a dying eucalyptus in front of the tree but please ignore it's leaves. The plant is a native, it was planted on government property. It has green and (some) red oval leaves (look at the leaves (in second photo) that are attached to the white flowers). It flowers in spring (September) and its flowers are small and white and (I think) seed pods which are red and furry. As you can see it is very bushy when untrimmed and continues to the ground. It's been there for 15+ years. We can't find anything similar but would love to have this in our yard. Thank you for any help!

Can't tell anything from those photos. Can you get close up of the flowers and leaves?

From your centre photo the flowers, leaves and form are similar to Raphiolepsis. R. umbellata (Yedda Hawthorn) has oval, dark green slightly leathery leaves and grows to 2 metres x 2 to 2.5 wide and the flowers, white, are slightly fragrant. Not sure if it grows as big as the plant in your other 2 photos though. And I doubt if it's a native.

Hazel (Corylus). Slender twigs and comparatively small, thin-looking leaves - as they appear in your picture - imply California hazel. Otherwise the other one you see around here - including growing wild - is orchard filbert. This is most quickly told apart from the native by it being visibly more robust in construction.

Looks like a broad-leaf privet, also called tree privet or Japanese privet. They can get up to 30 feet tall. They are invasive and not good in hurricanes. If you don't need it, I'd take it out.

Thank you so much for the replies, I didn't expect them to come quickly! blckrose, you are certainly right, it matches exact to the tree near my house. This was very surprising to me since the plants planted in our parks and government properties are only native. Thank you so much!

Pleasure Charlie, glad I was able to assist. Most, if not all, Raphiolepsis are quite hardy in temperate to semi-tropical gdns. If you want it in your garden now (Spring) is a good time to take a few cuttings. To do so just cut say half a dozen healthy stems about a quarter of an inch thick, take a sharp knife and slice away a section of bark (scrape) to expose the cambium tissue, dip the end in water and then into a hormone mix, dibble a hole in the potting mix and plant them all (about 6 or 8) into a pot of good potting mix, water and cross ya fingers. You can find plenty of guidance by googling potting up cuttings. Good luck.
