We don't have these bugs, I've never seen one. But I'm curious why, rhizo, aren't you a horticultural guru? They must have some negative conduct?

Elmer, the praying mantis is extremely beneficial in the garden, but they have been known to stab and consume hummingbirds.

Looks like it's Cobaea scandens (cup & saucer plant). Looks so cool trailing around the chair.

Olychick is correct. Sometimes called "Canterbury Bells". Plant the vines as early as possible in Spring for September blooms.

CindyMac, well I did have 2 pupas. This afternoon when I checked, pupa #1 had eclosed and the fresh new Monarch was hanging around drying and stretching. Picture tomorrow. That is a grass, Pennisetum 'hamlin'

I have never heard that about Praying Mantises. In high school biology we were required to do an insect collection, but were told that dragonflies, praying mantises, and one other that I can't remember, were such beneficial insects that we should capture they alive, show it to the biology teacher for credit, and then release the insect.
