Ummm, well, I know that we are in different zones, so I will just say what we do with ours. Gardenias aren't houseplants here, they are hardy bushes and shrubs that we do plant into the ground. And yes, they do require full sun. They also like soil on the acid side, like Camillas and Azaleas do. We fertilize ours with Miracid. Otherwise, they are pretty drought tolerant here and bloom several times a year. If you are keeping any plant as a houseplant for part of the year and then putting it out as an outdoor plant for the other part of the year, you need to make that transition slowly for the plant. Just because gardenias (or any other plant) may be a "full sun" plant, if you have been keeping it in less than full sun conditions for a period of months, you can't just plop it out into full sun on the first sunny day and leave it there. You have to kind of "step" it out. Maybe first put it out on the porch in the bright semi shade for a week, then out into dappled sun under a tree for a week, then in half day morning sun, then gradually out to full sun.

Thank you all for your great suggestions! I will be raising it indoors in a shady location. To me, shade is anywhere there is no direct sunlight so although I say shade it is fairly bright. I'm in Hawaii so it's glaringly bright, all over most of the time. My house just seems dark to me compared to what it's like outside, sorry for the confusion. I'll check into the Lady Palm and Kentia. I've seen the Chamaedorea around but wasn't too taken with the foliage. Truthfully I would LOVE to have a Traveler's Palm in that spot but I am afraid they require more sun than I can provide them. Unless I were to move it outside to spend the weekends, which I wouldn't mind doing but I'd better start going to the gym first before I take on a palm:) Thank you

Licualas do great in low light situations but pretty much all of them hate being indoors so that might not be the best palm in low light situations indoors. Raphis is probably your best bet for an indoor palm. They are incredibly hardy in any situation. They can handle having little natural light (especially if given artificial light like a brightly lit room) and they are pretty hardy in other aspects like cold tolerance (handling into the low teens briefly) and handling drought or flooding for brief durations. Spindle palms have proven to do well for me indoors but I dont think they would do well indoors long term, they do fine indoors 5 months out of the year for me though, they rarely get dry tips like other palms do indoors. Most of the chamaedorea species should do well for you indoors. Chamaedorea seifrizii does better indoors for me than it does outdoors! I hear fishtail palms are good indoors and they are definitely beautiful so they should be given a try! Good luck! -Alex
