Is this black spot? Spreading to all my roses

Hi,

I use a organic fungicide by witherspoon roses and using it always kept things in check. Lately no, the black spot seems to be coming back strong and spreading really fast to all my roses.

Is this black spot or am I mistaken? The leaves fall of easily when I try to remove them.

Yes, and it is the right time of year. Where are these leaves on the plant? They look older, and old leaves will look ratty and are more prone to blackspot infection this time of year. Also, have you had a lot of rain? Does the organic fungicide indicate reapplication after heavy rains?

I'm not sure what your picture is supposed to be showing that pertains to BS and missing leaves. What I see is a beautiful rose with many leaves, including new leaves, and lots of gorgeous blooms. So what is the problem? If you are asking what to do about BS, get some Bayer Garden Disease Control for Roses, Flowers, and Shrubs (get that name--NOT one of the other Bayer products)--at Lowes or online. Buy a small sprayer container for about $20 -- I got mine at Home Depot but other similar stores probably also carry them. Follow Bayer's directions carefully, but make sure you watered the roses deep and well the day before, and pick an early morning time for spraying, before the breeze picks up and swats you in the face with fungicide. Spray with that once or twice at 10 day interval, and probably you will have killed the BS. And with really hot weather coming, you may not have any more BS attacks until cooler weather in the Fall becomes more conducive the BS. But based on your pic, I'd say keep on watering your rose and enjoy it! Kate

Obviously others have not had a plague of cucumber beetles like I've had or they wouldn't dismiss them so easily. Like thrips, some years are worse then others but in a bad year they will shred every flower in sight. 2 years ago clouds of cucumber beetles (literally clouds) settled onto my fall flower display and within 2 days every mum, Helianthus, Aster and Zinnia was in tatters. My neighbor remarked that it looked like a plague of locusts had passed through. They also afflicted my roses, but with more petals the roses withstood the damage a bit better. In my area they are constantly present during the growing season, but fall is when their numbers can get out of control. I rarely do insecticides and it would have been particularly hazardous to do it when all the blooms were open as not only the cucumber beetles were present but also loads of bees, wasps, moths, butterflys etc. All I can do is pray that it doesn't happen that badly every fall. Blackspot is a plant disease caused by wind borne fungus spores in water drops.They land on the top of the leaves and when growing looks like circular black spots with irregular edges. The infected leaves will finally turn yellow and drop off. If the disease is severe all the leaves will drop off and the plant will have to grow a new set. The quality of the blooms will suffer and the plant will be weakened. Blackspot can not be cured but it can be controlled. In climates where there is a lot of rain in the summer or high humidity it becomes more prevalent. Blackspot can be controlled best by spraying with a dormant oil and sulphur spray in the early spring before the bush leafs out. Then again in the early summer using at half the strength. There are also other ways to keep it control. Clean up all dead and fallen leaves, water when the sun will dry the leaves off or use drip or soaker type hoses, remove first six inches of leaves from the ground up so splashed water won't jump the spores on the leaves, plus feed and water plants well as a weak or stressed plant will succumb more quickly . Finally choose varieties that are disease resistant.

Dianela, It looks just like the cercosora I occasionally get during the growing season. Cercospora is a fungus, doing damage to the roses very much like black spot does. The spots of cercospora have grayish or tan colored centers. Black spot is entirely black colored from the edge of the spot to its center. This is a difference without a distinction. Both fungus diseases are as nasty, as each one can be. I believe your fungus outbreak is on its way to being well controlled if a regular spraying with the Bayer fungaside is continued, which Bayer fungicide I use to keep my roses' foliage clean of disease. Your spray may have highlighted the fungus damage with additional damage if you accidentally measured the spray solution too strongly. You may also have sprayed dry, dehydrated roses. Spraying on a hot sunny day can damage the foliage too. Spraying a bush again, forgetting you sprayed it earlier, can result in foliage damage. I know.....I've done all the above myself! Sam how long have you use the same fungicide. I'm not saying this is what happened but black spot can build immunity too a single fungicide. So rotating what you use can be necessary. Also as the bushes grow larger thru the season it becomes difficult to hit all the leaves. Most organic fungicides need you to hit all the leaves.

"Organic fungicides" typically work only when disease pressure is low. When fall weather dramatically increases the disease pressure (by creating more frequent "wet leaf events" of greater duration, disease pressure goes way up and a more forceful solution is needed. IE; you need a "real" fungicide.

But at this point in the year, you are weeks away from natural defoliation anyway, so you could simply clean up all the fallen foliage as it drops and wait for a new growth cycle in the spring.

I did not see any organic fungicides on the Witherspoon website. What does the label say is in your fungicide?

I had excellent experience using ordinary corn meal under my roses. I had neglected the roses for other projects. By the time I got to this they had both black spot and powdery mildew as well as aphids. I cut off all the leaves with black spot, scattered a heaping handful of corn meal under each plant, and then dropped some compost. Then every month I repeated with only the corn meal. The second year I repeated the compost and monthly apps of corn meal. The corn meal is both an anti fungus agent and also an organic fertilizer. Corn meal works by attracting a predatory fungus that attacks the disease fungus. And I don't know if your experience will be like mine, but my aphids disappeared immediately with the corn meal and compost. That first app was in 2002 and for the past 15 years they have had no disease or aphids. I know how ridiculous this sounds, but I swear I have not used any other products on them.
