Installing Porcelain Tile over Sheet Vinyl
Comments (10)Many products suggest that this can be down. I have seen first hand a Porcelain Tile installed over Sheet Vinyl and got to look at the entire install up close and personal while I was ripping it out! The worst thing - it was down at my Nana's home. Some pirate, some cowboy took advantage of my Nana and charged her over $6,000 to install Porcelain Tile in her kitchen (tile cost $5.50 square foot and the total square footage was 300 square feet). I went after the guy who did this installation and he was not interested in dealing with me and took my suggestion of buying my Nana new tiles and giving her back $2,000.00 dollars so I could buy new cement board and reinstall this floor. In the end my Nana got what she wanted at premium price (still don't no why she didn't call me in the first place???) and I learned a lot about this type of installation. From my findings it's the amount of cushion in the vinyl and that a lot of prep needs to be done to rough up the surface. I have not found one person who has done this with success and when asked by new clients I retell this story and simply tell them I won't install this way - period. Good luck with your remodel! Comments (11)The only time you would use embossing leveler is when you are going over existing flooring that has an embossed surface. The overall price is about where it ought to be in some markets, but would be considered overcharging in some others. He is charging $1.29 per square foot for the preparation without looking at what's under the carpet. There will be prep work to do, but how much? I think he's given that price based on what his experience is with these types of jobs. We used to prep and install vinyl all the time...and we would spend an entire day just removing the carpet materials and prepping the slab. You really have to make the substrates smooth and debris-free to have an attractive and successful result in the long-term. A grain of sand under the floor at a critical location can make for an eyesore in an otherwise good installation. Preparation is most important...I cannot stress that more. Also, any filler needs to be a cementious formulation. Most 'white' floor fillers are not cementious and are not suitable for use as a floor filler. Your job should take a 'minimum' of two days to do from start to finish, especially if there is much prep to do. I would be uncomfortable were I told a job of that size would be complete in just one day. You don't want a rushed job...for it is usually on jobs that are rushed where there are problems down the road. Good luck....See MoreVinyl Flooring: Do It Yourself Planks vs. Sheet Vinyl Install
Comments (10)I put a high quality, floating floor in my apt kitchen in NYC to help with pet wear and tear. NOT the best option. If one piece needs to be replaced (and with pet accidents it bubbles very easily), you have to undo a whole section because they are interlocked. Also, they just don't look that great, no matter what we paid. So when it came time to make the rest of the apt floor look decent, we switched to vinyl planks from Lowes. Sounds gross, but they're actually amazing looking. Our apt was built in the 1880's, (the original floor was long destroyed and removed before we got it),and I found a dark gunstock in a wider cut that almost matched our neighbor's original floor exactly. You ready for this? 98 cents a sq foot! If one gets damaged you peel it off (with some effort) and put a replacement. Echoflooring is sooo right about batch colors. Get it all at once and mix up the boxes as you lay it. We have a bunch of mixed ones for replacement and haven't used one, not one, but I know we have them. Lowes will recommend their sealer, but we didn't use it. They self stick just fine. One or two spots came up after we were first done and someone on line told us to use a hairdryer to reheat it and lay a book on top overnight. Worked like a dream. Our apt in NY is 800 sq ft and our current tenant is a photographer with two rescue cats and she loves the floor. Even with her keen eye, we had to tell her they were vinyl and how to replace it if she had a pet accident. She was blown away! I will try to post a picture of our NY apt floor for you. To be fair to our tenant the photographer, I took the horrible quality pics w my cell, not her! LOL! Choose wisely for your space and go with your fave, not what everyone says you should do, incl me. And pls do remember the color batch issue echoflooring brought up. Good luck :) Here is a link that might be useful: NYC vinyl plank floor...See MoreSkim-coating luan prior to installing sheet vinyl
Comments (19)Thank you. I actually contacted the manufacturer of the vinyl flooring that's in my DR/LR/Hall in June because when I asked the store's receptionist why the Owner/Mngr wasn't returning my calls, I was told he had contacted the manufacturer and was waiting to hear back from them. Well, I called the manufacturer and it turns out they hadn't been contacted by anyone from the store. After I shared this revelation with the store's receptionist, the salesman called me back and set up an apt to come to my home to look at the floor. It was during his visit that I showed him all of my photos. He also explained to me what luan is and why it's installed, so at that point, I still thought they had installed luan back in July (because "install new luan" was on the contract). Again, no mention of skim coating. Just an acknowledgement that there clearly is a problem but that it's probably caused by the structure of the home. He left and said he'd discuss it with his Mngr. A few days later when I called for an update, he said the installers will come back to cut the vinyl slightly away from the walls (something which had not been done though I read in the manufacturer's instructions that it should have been done). When the installers came back, they did cut the vinyl away from the wall on one edge and did a very sloppy job. I'm glad they decided not to do the same on any of the other edges since they did such a careless job. I will see if I can get a rep from each of the manufacturers to perform an inspection. At this point, I have zero faith in the honesty/integrity of the store from which the flooring was purchased. (The installers were subcontracted by the store.) Thank you!...See MoreChessie
