How to get from boring oak to "cerused oak" finish for cabinets?
Comments (33)cor, I don't even know what you did here. the wood needs to be complete stripped bare. you need to keep the grain open when applying the dye/and the liming wax. did you dilute your shellac 50/50 w/denatured alcohol? did you read the link w/all the directions? yes,,you had a major fail. this was a good oak piece that would have taken a nice ceruse, if done correctly. I said it was an insane amount of work. no shortcuts can be done w/this. now you know. this is raw oak. not a stitch of stain or color on it. I left the grain a little raised for better absorption. this is how that table should look before you even start those doors should be taken off to work on and that whole piece should be somewhere where you can strip and sand it. did I mention it takes hours and hours? you can't just sand off half the stain, put on new stain, shellac and liming wax! doesn't work that way....See MoreHelp! Rift sawn oak cabinets: clear finish, stain or cerused?
Comments (10)Hi, Sophie, Scherr's will do the clear coat. They will also do any Sherwin Williams stain. By specialty finish, if you mean the ceruse finish, I am talking to a local cabinet refinisher about it. He does not build cabinets. But I don't think it's likely we will go that route, for a number of reasons. Fori, thanks for weighing in. We will be ordering some sample doors. I have some white oak samples, so if we decide to stain, I may try some of the stains out before asking them to put them on sample doors. I feel the need to narrow the options down a bit first. The clear finish that Scherr's uses comes in two sheens: dulled rubbed (flat) and medium rubbed (satin). Does anyone know if the flat finish would hold up as well as the satin, be as easy to clean? Does the sheen determine durability and cleanability as well as the shine level? Thanks again!...See MoreKitchen Cabinet Color to go with Chantilly Lace Walls

Comments (23)@gayleen1 I wanted a slab door but found out that is one of the more expensive doors! Who would of thought? We are on a very tight budget but think this is where we want to splurge. Kitchens are hard working rooms and I do a lot of cooking. I need to revisit door styles. We are having a rather large island and now I'm thinking of doing a MDF island painted a Ben Moore blue Not sure which. Could save some $$ with just doing perimeter cabinets in the oak. This is a new build and we are still tweaking the kitchen. I will keep you posted....See MoreMrs. S
