Winter Lighting/ LED grow lights

Hi All, I am hoping to provide my seedlings with some extra light during the winter. I have a baker's rack set up in a window that gets some morning light ( the best natural lighting I have access to). I was toying around with covering the back of the rack with aluminum foil to get some reflected light. I saw an LED rope light set for sale and though that if it even added minimal benefit, it would be worth the try. I'll try to attach some photos and specs of what I found. If you have some advice, I'm all ears. Those of you who will be affected by Irma, I'm thinking of you and stay safe everyone.

Isn't that funny? I was looking online on Ebay for just the same thing this weekend. The only difference is that I was looking for the type you suspend from the ceiling. My front porch has two windows that allow the full winter sun to come in but on either side there's a spot the the sun doesn't reach. My intention is to supplement those darkened areas to help the other plants get some much needed light. Currently I have a double light fixture with screw in fluorescent lights but they don't seem to put out as much light as I would want. Has anyone else used these high output LED lights and would you recommend them? My heart, prayers and thoughts are with all the folks in Florida that have been affected by Irma also.

I used 400W MH lights for years, but over the past couple of years switched to T5 fluorescent tubes (I use the 4 ft long ones and have the fixtures that hold 8 bulbs each). The plants seem to do well, even the winter growing ones that are dormant in the summer so all they see is indoor lighting except maybe a month in the spring and a month in the fall. You can get these in 2 ft length and fixtures that only hold 2 or 4 bulbs as well. Best of luck :o)

My brother lives in WPB and was one of the lucky few that never lost power. He dodged a bullet on that front.

Plants can use the whole spectrum, but they use red most efficiently and they need some blue to avoid getting leggy and so on. If LED grow lights live up to their labeling, they theoretically should give the lowest possible electric bill while still providing adequate light to your plants. But that has to be weighed against the up-front cost. That's in theory. I don't have the practical experience to say much. A 20W incandescent doesn't use much electricity, but it also doesn't put out much light. A 13W CFL from the dollar store would give more, and it's so cheap it would probably pay for itself before it burns out, even off that dinky 7W savings. A 5W LED should give more light than the incandescent, at least. But even with LED efficiency, 5W isn't much.

If you are looking for a LED light and you want something that approximates a 400 or 600 watt HPS, you aren't gonna find a real system for less that the Procyon. Anything that you will find of the variety of the cheap led panels or the ufos have pretty much been shown to be useless cause their leds are too weak as any hydro store owner will tell you. The state of the technology is such that there are really only two products out there that really work -- procyon 100 or the ti-smartlamp 600 and its stronger 1000 watt version the Smartbar. If you take a look at greenpinelane.com you can see tests on all of them. The thing to remember about leds is that while they cost much more than HPS initially they payback the difference quite quickly, in 1 to 3 years depending on how much you pay for power and whether you need to cool, which you will have to do if you use HPS. They have a lifespan of about 10 years so the cost savings overall of LED versus HPS can be quite important, usually somewhere between 40% to 100% when you factor in the power savings. I switched to the Smartlamp myself for the powersavings once I was sure it could flower which it can since it is the only LED out there that i know of that has more than just red and blue leds. From the information I've found, that light looks like it will work as a supplemental light source (so keep your plants by the window). Since it is billed as "a light source for low light plants" and "a T8 fluorescent replacement", I would suspect that even as a supplemental light source you are going to want to leave it on for an extended period - 12 to 14 hours a day. I also wouldn't hang it any higher above your plants than it would have been above the plants in your planted aquarium. Light intensity goes down, a lot, as distance increases - which you probably remember from your time with the planted tank.
