Hydrangeas on the Prairies ?
Comments (145)Bill, that's a nice healthy paniculata, though too bad about the nipping of buds! I live in a forest with tons of nuisance deer and protect a good deal of my garden with those Scarecrow Sprinklers. The devices are not 100% reliable in that they need to be reset quite often, the older models had worked very effectively in comparison, though I can sleep pretty well when checking them before heading to bed. Vivienne, yes, the weather is dreadful and has been for weeks on end, just near constant overcast and rain, rain, rain and well below normal temperatures! As for hydrangeas, 'Incrediball' is doing great, it's grown huge and up to my chest and nicely budded up! 'Invincibelle Spirit II' is coming along just fine and paniculata 'Little Lamb' is pushing buds and so is 'Lavalamp Moonrock', albeit a bid later (I love this hydrangea btw!). 'Little Quickfire' was damaged and slowed by winter's wrath and is well behind where it should be for this time of the year, but what's not late due this crappy non summer like weather!...See MoreWhat to do when it's 25 degrees outside - share your garden pics!
Comments (38)Bella, you have many great varieties! I love coral charm and do tell. Well I pretty well love them all to be honest! I planted a number of itoh peonies, for some reason, as lovely as they are, they just aren’t the same as herbaceous peonies. I planted three tree peonies this year but it’s way too soon to tell what those will be like How did you find the zinnias to grow? I have several varieties I want to try! And sunflowers as well! To be honest there’s a very extensive list of ‘trials’ I am planning to conduct in the spring with seeds .. lol. Luckily I have no squirrels around here , or if they are around they certainly don’t go into my beds. I tend to plant the double type tulips, which resemble peonies. Drop dead gorgeous blooms. My faves from last year were sensual touch which is a double-fringe I think, my gosh are they ever beautiful. la belle epoque was gorgeous too! I love bringing in cut flowers into the house. I can’t wait for spring...See MoreThoughts on Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangeas?
Comments (22)We have several Little Limes that are very pretty! I underestimated their size and probably planted them too close but I do like them. We‘ve had them probably 6 years and the one that gets the most sun is about 5 1/2 feet tall, which is bigger than I expected. We have a Lime Soda which is the same age and is about 10 feet and impressive. Another one from that family is Phantom and it’s nearly that big and nice as well. I do love oakleafs in shady spots - we have at least 15 Alice throughout the property and they are beautiful this year. I think all the rain and mild temps so far in SoIL have been just what they like! Ruby Slippers is a nice small oakleaf that is a manageable size. We struggle to keep them all sprayed to deter the deer tho!...See MoreRecommend a pink hydrangea please?
Comments (20)pennlake, I don't exactly know what you are saying. 'Basing the performance of a plant on the input from people that voluntarily post on a forum is not necessarily representative of true performance of that Variety.' The posters are reporting how the plants perform in their gardens! Hydrangeas as well as other plants are different in different growing zones, sun/shade environments and soil conditions! We are not trying to be dogmatic but are here to share our experiences with these plants. Your Summer Crush grows in your garden without any protection - I can only say, 'good for you!' But, warning a new gardener that she might need to winter protect is information to help her and will probably save her time and money. Some of us are professional growers and propagators and your dismissive words are not helpful....See Morenicholsworth Z6 Indianapolis
