I'm an orchid grower and live in Florida, received a Anthurium as a gift two years ago. I loved the color of the 'flower' which was a rose pink. It was growing out of its pot and I quickly repotted in Miracle Gro and 1/2 orchid bark (small bark.) Unfortunately, I never researched the plant. Life was busy, we were moving into a new house. I placed the plant on a bench in strong East sun with my orchids under some shade cloth. I have been amazed at the growth and flowering. I do not have brown leaves and had no idea it was in the orchid family. It has outgrown its new pot and I plan to repot this spring. Your post is so informative, I am saving it. Thanks for your reply, purpleinopp. Your anthurium in the photo is really nice looking. I probably never clarified before now that the majority of the leaves ARE splotched with dry brown patches. The new growth and a couple leaves are still shiny and beautiful, but about 80% of the leaves are damaged to some degree, some a lot worse than others - which is why I was hesitant to cut off all the ones with splotches. I only removed the ones that were really bad, like the close-up leaf photo above. I used to move the plant outside occasionally in the morning for a few hours usually. It was on a west facing patio with an overhang, not getting direct sun on it, but a few times I might have left it out a little too long when afternoon sun started shining down. I won't do that anymore. I have already repotted the plant - I got a new 6" plastic container (same size) but used some Miracle Grow orchid mix. Then today I looked at the Orchid Mix ingredients and peat is a main component. So it looks like I'll need to redo it again. I will also consider planting it in a terracotta pot and saucer insteaD of plastic pot with a cache pot.

Does the soil drain well? These plants grow in habitats similar to orchids, and they prefer a fast draining mix, preferably with some perlite and orchid bark mixed into the soil as well. You may also be fertilizing it too much, too. I have a couple of Anthurium hybrids ( red & white), and I sparingly use fertilizers on them. As with orchids and other epiphytic plants, when fertilizing them, less is more. They fare much better with their fertilizers being more diluted, or "weakly, weekly." I had this same situation, and it was attracting fungus gnats... I bought mine from BJs and it was indoors for an indefinite amount of time with plastic all around it, so I’m sure it was way too humid and moist. I sprinkled cinnamon on the soil and that took care of the fungus gnats. I also cut off the leaf that it was on and so far it seems to be doing ok except I had a couple of new leaves dry up before they fully opened. I’m probably being way too conservative on watering at this point bc screw those damn gnats lol
