Help with chandelier replacement for dining room

I am in the process of updating my house,have almost finished the living room and want to start on the dining room. Would greatly appreciate suggestions as to how to update it without replacing the furniture ( I replaced everything in the living room which was very traditiional but I wanted something more conducive to our current life style. i like the dining room but feel replacing the chandelier and oriental rug would make a difference but don't know what to replace them with. Right now I look in this room and think it's pretty but needs a kick so it's not quite as formal looking. I am attaching pictures of the living room, dining room and foyer and appreciate any suggestions offered.

Would something such as this work in your home? This is my dining room and it my favorite chandy in the house.

I am not sure you want opinions on the rug..just the lighting..but I LOVE IT. It is your color and I wouldn't change it. From your living room I get the vibe you like the barrel look...there are many out there. Not my aesthetic but it would meld with what you are doing in the living room.

thanks. I do want opinions on the rug as well. I am considering replacing the rug and chandelier in the dining room and once I have done that, will decide if I want to make more changes. When you say barrel look are you referring to a drum fixture to replace the chandelier? I like the idea, my concern is it would block the art so I would need to do a flush mount and have only seen one that may work style wise but its only 19 inches wide and I am concerned that's too small and will get lost.

It's actually a great fixture, just not for your dining room. (Advertise it on Craigslist or replace a kitchen light with it.) Here's an article on proper measurements for a dining pendant that will be in proportion to the room and table and tell you how low to hang it. https://www.houzz.com/magazine/how-to-choose-a-dining-table-light-stsetivw-vs~91245713 A white or ivory round drum shade pendant with bronze finish would offer contrast with your dark table and sideboard. @Webado, what are you on about? It isn’t necessary to cut a channel in the ceiling to run a wire. And those spray-on textured ceilings can be patched. Not a big deal at all. That’s just looking for something to be contentious about. Weird. Why do that? You also don‘t need to “break the wall” for wiring if the sconces (not ”scones,” which would not hang on a wall very well) are hung above a wall plug. And the chandelier height? Huh? There is a standard height for hanging a light over a table. That existing chandelier is hung way too high. If that were my condo, I would have the crew scrape off the ceiling texture, btw. The stuff breaks down over time, and it holds dirt. Again, not a complicated job (unless you‘re dealing with an older property and there is asbestos in the “popcorn” material), but it’s messy and takes potentially expensive hours of labor. The pro due is to spray the ceiling to soften the stuff, and then it’s scraped off, and finally the ceiling gets a skim coat of plaster. But I doubt this homeowner wants to get into any of that.

I have almost your exact dining room set except that my chair backs are rattan. I am very interested in the responses here. My chandelier needs to be replaced. The current one came with the late 80's fixtures in the house. It is brass and looks like an outtake from "Little Shop of Horrors." I call it the "Audrey Light" because it has tulip shaped sconces on an undulating frame. Ugh!

I am leaning towards a simple cast iron candelabra style thing, but I'm on the fence. Wouldn't mind something mildly oriental mid century modern.

Something like this because I hate fake flame bulbs, although these new electric candles offer intriguing possibilities. Maybe ditch the smaller metal cording and add some beaded bling on the shades.

As far as blocking the art, I would assume the art is mostly enjoyed when sitting at the table. The light won't block it when seated. Same if you can see it from other rooms. It might block part of the art from different angles as you walk by, but really, you're mostly looking at it when seated, I would guess.

I'm going to speak up for leaving it just the way it is pictured. You have beautiful traditional furniture. The walls have sconces and a paneled trim. The picture frame reflects and is harmonious with the lighting fixtures. I like it. Your home is not open concept. You have a formal dining room. Keep it that way. Instead of buying a new chandelier that is very trendy, have a dinner party with friends in your formal dining room. Commit to using the room. It's a lovely room.

Definitely replace the chandelier. I really like aktillery's chandelier and would go for something in that style.

I am really not into traditional rooms, but I love your oriental rug and would certainly keep it. IMO, the rug goes with a much more relaxed, less formal style.

I'd remove that plate --- too formal and blocks the view of your gorgeous art work. I'd also remove the candle sticks.

Lastly, I'd probably replace the chairs for something less Queen Anne. Or maybe change the seat fabric?

I've been toying with covering my chairs with slipcovers. But I'm big into tablecloths, so that might be too much fabric in the room. Unfortunately, I'm such a spiller I would wreck the beautiful wood table top in no time. I have a plain floor though. Right now my floor is carpet which I hate but we are replacing it with wood. But in your case, slipcovers might look great and add modernity or a little more casual look to the room. They are not inexpensive though. I'm thinking of taking up sewing just so I can make some! A more airy light fixture will definitely bring out the art more. Still, as is, your room is fab!

Your home is beautiful and you've done a great job on changing your living room. For the dining room I would take what you have off the console and put something less elegant in its place, no gold tones, perhaps more rustic candle holders with blue candles and a modern ceramic bowl. I'm showing the tribal rug in my dining room that is less formal and lighter in color. I would find something unique and not formal to put on the dining table. Mine has a 19th century Chinese famille rose bowl and two small 18th century plates. Just find something you love that has an unusual vibe to put there. A large plant or two might also be an idea. I have one real and one faux one.
