MaddieLee that's a very cool article. Thank you for posting it! The little spot we go to has about 50 colors of dye that looks like watered down paint. You pick your colors and brushes, they pour a little into a plastic cup and you paint. Actually you can see me painting in the top right hand corner of the first picture. I love to paint so I think I'm going to try to get the dyes and scarves to do here at home. Thank you Raven, I like the penguins too! Linelle, I'm beginning to think the scarf painting is a little local thing but canvas painting has been around for a while and if you go to your local Groupon webpage and search in art classes, you will probably find quite a few available.. There are even franchises for it now.. Typically, they pick the art the class paints but when it's done, you'll have a canvas piece you did to take home. @rsanfo0 i’d love to see pictures too! I tried whitewashing with a particular brand’s “whitewash paint” and the result was just too bright white. If i applied lightly, the orangey tone peeked thru and almost looked pink-peach. If i applied more layers, the white was too stark white. Do you know which paint was used for your whitewash? (i practiced on extra travertine just like my backsplash) Did you paint your cabinets white and then use the same white for the backsplash, diluted to make the whitewash? Sorry for all the questions, i am so antsy to get started and find a solution! I planned to seal and protect with Minwax Polycrylic after painting because it doesnt yellow like polyurethane, and it is soap and water cleanup. This brand has sheens ranging from matte to gloss, so give it a try! Looking forward to hearing back!

In today's world, all the product development is with water based (because oil based is illegal in Europe). Which means the last 10 years (I would even say the last 5 years with Loba) have seen a MASSIVE jump forward in performance. And remember: oil based finishes have HORRIBLE odours that can take MONTHS to dissipate (summer months when the doors and windows are open 24/7). In winter it can take twice as long to get rid of the odour. And for some that means hotels or staying with family/friends for the whole time (no one likes a house guest who sticks around for 4 months). And the oil based finishes turn "yellow" within a few DAYS (you will never see the gray you were hoping for). And then they turn orange (darker yellow) over time...like a few years.
