Sweet Autumn Clematis..can I train it?
Comments (13)Prairemoon, It was a lot easier to move than I expected. Of course, there were a lot of roots left behind because there were a lot of roots that were close to the surface that had spread far from the plant. I moved it before it was tall enough to attach to the arbor, so I didn't have to cut it back. I think I only slowed the growth down by a couple of weeks. I mixed compost into the soil and either bone meal or rose tone, and I also used rooting hormone. Mine blooms in late August or September, and for that reason, I moved the SAC from the arbor because it was in a prominent spot. I wanted to see color in the summer, not a tunnel of green, although it was nice to stand under the arbor feeling enveloped by the lushness. I moved the SAC to a corner where I am going to try to get it to climb into a tree. I'm not sure how well it will flower because there might be too much shade. If that doesn't work, I'll probably move it so it can climb along the fence. Your wire idea is a good one. I think I will do the same at some point....See Morepruning sweet autumn NEXT spring
Comments (4)Good morning, leftycatcher. You are posting on the wrong forum but wow, I am surprised to hear that clematis could die just because of "bad pruning" per se! I have always considered them to be pretty strong and sweet autumn is winter hardy most everywhere. How strange and what a mystery! Have you looked for additional causes or complications to explain this? By the way, the Clematis Forum is in this link: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/clematis/ If someones knows what happened or if you do find a way for pruning to cause a clematis shrub to die as you describe, please post a note here. Puzzled minds want to solve this mystery. I am of course, several zones warmer than you but I sent some clematis to my MIL in NH so I would like to pass along any pruning do/don'ts that could kill the plants. Comments (3)Hi Terri, Ok, I'm glad you know what I mean. Often people save the seeds not realizing that sometimes they never got fertilized. It is odd too, some varieties seem to have lots of ripe seeds while others have hardly any. I just collected seeds of one variety that blooms fairly early. I'm watching another that blooms a bit later. They are almost ready. My sweet autumn is just a baby, so I don't know about it in particular. Comments (1)When the flowers start to fade, use old-fashioned manual hedge clippers to chop off the fading blooms so that it doesn't have the chance to go to seed. Also, this is a type 3 prune plant, so in late winter, before or just as buds start to swell, chop it down to about 3 buds per stem....See Moredbarron
