Hornet Sting?

I think I was stung by a hornet last night. I can't be certain, as I was jumping about, trying to get whatever had sunk its stinger into my ankle off of me. I finally brushed it off and removed the stinger with tweezers. I read that hornets and wasps don't leave the stinger, but this was no bee. Maybe the stinger broke off when I hit the critter?

Anyway, the pain has been INTENSE! Four ibuprofen didn't touch it all night. I didn't get any sleep, as the only way to not have searing, burning pain was to keep it iced. It still hurts a lot this morning, and the area is red and swollen. It even hurts to walk. Does this sound about right for a hornet sting? If so, how long does this pain last? Is there anything that I can use topically that dulls the pain? I have tried vinegar, rubbing a cut onion on it, various ointments and creams and nothing works. It's been almost 14 hours and it feels only marginally better. Thanks for any suggestions you might have!
