New hostas arriving tomorrow or Wed.--I'm sick & can't plant
Comments (2)I had a Haylcon sit on the kitchen counter wrapped in the wet paper towel and plastic wrap it was shipped in for more than 2 weeks once. It survived! Last year we had 75 hostas in the living room until the danger of last frost passed. I believe that was about a month. Your hostas will do fine sitting in temporary containers until you plant them in the ground. Remember to water them though. Gesila...See MoreNew hostas arrived!! They are gorgeous!
Comments (11)The Neighbor's Plot is merely on the other side of the sidewalk leading up to our common porch. Think of it as an extension of MY garden plot, interrupted by 30" of concrete. Since neither the upstairs nor downstairs neighbor has shown any interest in planting their common plot, and they have given me an enthusiastic green light this year to plant their plot, it will basically become "my" plot. What is truly funny is, here they have utterly ignored the plot for years and NOW the Chinese upstairs neighbor has proudly pointed out that he has forbidden his 20s-something son to throw cigarettes on the ground around the gardens, as his contribution to the garden's beauty. Wow. That's a major, as it has been disgusting to find butts all over the ground. Now it's cleaned up and looks sooo much nicer. I know you folks Outoftown must be rolling in laughter at this last bit, with your big lawns and personal forests, but this is inch-by-inch Queens, NY. Every bit of greening it up is a victory against apathy and lowlifes who would view your yard as a garbage can as they walk by. Our complex is really quite beautiful, with 930 units on many acres of lawn, trees and shrubs. I am a soldier against ugly, armed with shovel and trowel, powered by a striving for color and beauty for all to enjoy....See MoreMy hostas from Made in the Shade arrived!
Comments (12)Theresa, I have no doubt that with "Nanny Bloomberg" (may he drop dead at his earliest convenience, or even sooner) there would be no carry licenses around here. Besides, with these incidents far from rare around here, I would surely get a "no littering" ticket from some skinhead cop. I just installed (in the battering rain leftovers from Hurricane Andrea) a stark white glazed ceramic pot in my hosta garden, mounted atop an adorable wire cat-face Halloween decoration. It was 75% off after Halloween, who could resist? It was meant to have a pumpkin sit on the shelf behind the face, but I substituted this snow-white utterly plain (doesn't even have a rim) tall narrow pot, the better to show off the kitty face. But you better believe it is chained to the tree in the middle of the garden with 1/4" airplane cable coming out through its drainage hole and a sturdy lock. Last year, some lowlife stole the beautiful white rock I'd placed in the garden in this very spot. Now try it, scum-of-the-earth. I absolutely MUST take pics of this cat-face creation to share with you guys. It came out sooo cute, and the bright yellow tuberous begonias and fuschia/yellow callibrachoa planted in the pot lend a spot of needed color to the hosta garden, a focus....See MoreNew hosta order arrived today
Comments (7)I am so jealous of your Deep Blue Sea. I bought one just as it was breaking ground this spring. It was so small, and the first leaves were all split from the tip to the petiole. Very strange. But now the second flush is coming in looking better. It's still awfully puny compared to yours. Nice hostas. Lois...See MoreEsther-B, Zone 7a
