I found a few on a chilly Friday

The weather has turned quite cool today. Highs are in the high 60's and it is windy and overcast. Even though it is cloudy, there is no rain in the forecast, which is bad news for us. We are quite dry here now. None the less, I found a few flowers to photograph today.

The color of Cajun Christmas was really intense and one petal has this extra material down the center.

No Mans Land is reblooming.

The rest are seedlings.

This is going to be an introduction next year. If all goes well, it is to be named Krakatoa Katie. It is Triple Cherries X Bill Norris or Volcano Queen (I am not sure which.) It is named for a character in the Mighty Mouse cartoon called Krakatoa.

Debra, we plan on introducing three next year. Krakatoa Katie and Stumpy are two. The third one that will be introduced is Ashwood Summer Sunshine X Cactus Blossom. We have a name selected, but it is not reserved yet, so I won't mention it now. This daylily is a late bloomer with scapes over 36 inches tall, 3-4 way branching with bud count in excess of 20. It is highly pod and pollen fertile. I just wish the color was a bit brighter. We have not observed any rebloom on this one, but I think that might be understandable as late as it blooms. Maybe further south it would rebloom.

This whole business of registering and introducing daylilies is a bit scary. We don't want to introduce ones that are not worth anything. But Bob says every hybridizer had to jump in and start somewhere. We hope to have a couple to introduce every year after this.

KK is a lovely double and Bob's favorite color, a win, win! "Stumpy" looks great in double form. It's cool and dry here up north, looking forward to predicted rain early next week, had to do some watering today.

Lucky you to still have daylily blooms. Mine have all finished so the other plants will provide color until the first frost rolls through in mid October. . Same here with the daytime temps over the past couple of days only going into the mid to upper 60's with nights dipping down into the high 40's to low 50's. Next week back to 80's or so they say.

I love the photo of PREDICTION looking up at the sun. And BEAUTIFUL EDGINGS is such a favorite of mine. A couple of days ago I was on Daves Garden adding photos of BE and I noticed in their description of BE that they said the color is cream/tan. What? The glitter on LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE is very sparkly. Your photo captures it well. I had a couple this year that looked like the edges had been painted with Elmer's Glue and then dipped in glitter, but I never got a good photo. Chilli Jelly recipe This recipe uses the natural pectin found in apples to set the jelly. Alternatively you could use pecting to set the jelly and leave out the apples however I prefer the more natural option. Ingredients: 1 kg of cooking or crab apples 500 ml of Water 500ml of cider vinegar Sugar (1lb of sugar to each pint juice A handful of fresh chillies (vary according to taste/variety, i use about 15). Method: Add the chopped apples (including the peel & core which is where most of the pectin is found!) to 500ml of cold water and 500ml of cider vinegar. Throw in about half the chopped chillies then bring to the boil then simmer for about 25 minutes. Pour the contents of the pan through a piece of thick muslin or a jelly bag. The key here is not to force the pulp through the muslin as this can result in a cloudy jelly. Leave to drip through the bag for 5 hours. Put the strained juice/pulp into a pan on a low heat. Measure the jucie and stir in half a kg of sugar per pint of strained juice/pulp. Once the sugar has been stirred in add the some more finely chopped chillies then turn the heat up for a further 10 minutes. Place in clean jars and boil to steralise. This stuff is superb and is delicious served with cheese & crackers and sandwiches/toasties

Roots can stand a lot of jostling. Get a trowel in the pot and loosen the root ball around the edges. If it's not too root bound, you should be able to tease it out. Not critical yet. Hack that towering stem off when you can. It's not critical to do it right now, but it will make re-potting a lot easier. I would treat the spider mites first. You can pull off the webs with a paper towel then apply insecticidal soap. Read the directions and soak the little buggers. Your watering scheme is working - the plant has gotten this far - so keep at it for now. Try to get it more light. Closer to window and lower so all the leaves get some light. Peppers are tough. How would you evaluate No Mans Land? (Don't know if it was registered with an apostrophe or not.) Pattern isn't very noticeable in your pic. Curt tends to introduce them early, and they continue to sift through an evaluation process. Krakatoa Katie is colorful, but I hope it is more vigorous than Triple Cherries. Would be nice if it repeated, like Bill Norris.

Today's high of 62 in Columbus today shattered a 109-year-old record (by four degrees) for the coldest high. I'm afraid fall may be much cooler than normal, as more of the same is forecast for later next week.

Mantis, we haven't had No Mans Land long enough to evaluate it yet. It is reblooming, but I have never seen a pattern like the one in Curt's picture in the AHS database. There is no apostrophe in the name either. As a former English teacher, that really bugs me. Krakatoa Katie is reblooming. The scapes on the rebloom are taller and the flowers larger than the first time around.

The actual process for registration is quite simple. You just fill out a form and submit and name, picture, and your money. The process of deciding which ones are worthy to be registered is what is hard.
