I would search for red rex begonias (images) and see if you can find any that match your memory. It does sound like a rex. Dragon Wings is a registered begonia name and is noted for its ever blooming red flowers (and there is a pink blooming one too) and how it holds up in full sun. Angel wing begonias is a common catch all phrase applied to lots of cane type begonias (not rexes).

Now comes some tidbits from a Floridian! First, Rexes do not thrive in FL. They are grown in temp controlled greenhouses with swamp coolers, which is why you see them for sale. Although it may feel muggy if you are in one, the temp is lowered during the day and cooled at night - relatively. There are newer rex/rhizo hybrids I am growing with success, but pure rexes never make it in our hot, wet summers. It is truly the hot nights that kill them. 80F lows are not uncommon. In habitat, rexes see 68-70F at night. Secondly, whomever started this thread is growing in soil that is way too heavy. I use Fafard #2 with additional perlite and pine bark added. I also keep my begonias barely potted up - like a few inches larger when they need it. That ensures the soil does not stay wet, which kills begonias. If you struggle to pick up a bag of soil, it is too heavy. I have five foot canes in 3 gallon pots. I can easily pick up a 3 gallon cane with one hand - that is what they prefer. Hi Krolik, How's your plant doing? Here are a couple of thoughts. 1, Travel can be stressful for plants, they can pick up exposure to who knows what. 2, Bathroom humidity, It may not dry out enough, in there, to kill unwanted organisms, or let the plant cells move water. Consider moving the plant out of there for a few days, or a couple of weeks. Just give it a light morning spritz in it's new home. A flor. plant light -10$ and timer -8$ if the light needs adjusting+ a little, somewhere else. 3, Light anti-fungals/microbials, Neem oil from Logee's, that stuff is good! Meanwhile, have you tried watering with a little green tea, or black tea or coffee that's been thinned, or a spray of water and white vinegar, say from 1/10th to 1/3rd vinegar? And there's lysol spray, or other similar cheap substitute [saw that in gardenweb, just don't remember if it was on begonias]. My begonias perk up with the vinegar spray. One liked half cup of old coffee in its quart+ watering pot too. 4, Soil changes/repot.I had an ailing Sophie Cecile, one I had growing on from cuttings. I took a chance with it, because I didn't want to throw it out. I repotted it, down a little, because of fewer roots, with a little good soil from the yard. The soil had a little clay, a tiny bit of wood ash, some peaty compost, and maybe a little dog residue. They are supposed to like a little clay, and potash is good for fighting ills, and the texture was open from the plant material. It turns out that there's something in dung preferably cow, that helps fight off some virus or fungus or other. It was happy at the end of the summer,when it came out from under a shrub. I'm hoping that you can hold out till spring when you can set it in a protected spot.

I thought fusca but then discarded that idea. Certainly not C. Queen. The bigger succulent leaves are a little more difficult to start but not impossible. The idea is to treat them like succulents (very little moisture inside but still cover them to keep humidity in) and when they start rooting then to give them more water. I first thought nelumbiifolia but then your mother's leaves look different than yours. Here is my old C. Queen in an 18 inch pot back in 2005. My biggest one was Lotusland and I kept it for two years - it is a monster. I was able to propagate it from leaves but it was more difficult than other large leaf begonias. I found another name you might want to check - gigantea. At least this how I bought it - from left to right gigantea, Sophie, and a smaller version of Lotusland
