I'm still missing the timeline. Did you spray RU 5x in one day (I doubt it). What was the timing for your spray apps? What I usually tell people is to water lightly every day, 3x per day, for a full week. That should sprout any weed seeds. Then spray with RU, but continue watering for a second week. At the end of the second week, spray the RU again. Then wait for everything to die, rake it up, and drop the seed. Would you mind opening up a new topic for Thunder Turf in Austin and keep us up to date as to what it is and how it's working for you? I don't think many of us are familiar with it, but it should be a reasonable alternative in both southern and transition zone lawns. It might even work in the north. Where did you get the Thunder Turf seed? I know Douglass King Seed has it in San Antonio.

All common purslane is edible, but there are many other purslanes that are not. Moss rose is one, for instance. The common weedy purslane can differ according to where and how it grows. I've never bought it, so I'm not sure about the big, green purslane from Mexican stores, but it's probably been watered, fertilized and cared for otherwise, to grow as large as it can. You can do the same with any that grows wild. I've seen it with leaves an inch wide alongside irrigation ditches where it gets water as well as fertilizer runoff

Purslane is easy to kill with hoeing/tillage when it is a seedling up to a couple leaves. Once it gets bigger, it seems to survive off the moisture in the stems and leaves long enough to re-root, so bigger plants are very hard to kill unless they are fully buried and get no light or removed from the garden. Pre-emergent weed killers can do an excellent job. Look for a weed killer that contains trifluralin as an active ingredient and shallowly incorporate it into the soil before the purslane gets started in the spring. It won't hurt perennials. It may do some root pruning on transplanted annuals, and gets along well with some garden vegetables such as legumes, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, peppers, and cabbage family. It will prevent squash family from germinating and growing, and will damage corn roots. So, you just have to be careful where you use it. If used at the correct rate, it will not linger into the next year. I like to spray it where I plant my peppers and tomatoes after transplanting as it provides season long control. In a lawn, broadleaf herbicides such as 2,4-D and dicamba will do a good job killing it without hurting the grass.
