New Zealand lemonade is definitely on my list! I just have track one down. I stalk Four Winds weekly. I also need another regular everyday lemon. I use about a dozen a week in juice and tea. im in zone. I'm in zone 6a, about 45 mins north of ny,ny.

Feminello, if in good condition, it will have lemons twice a year. They are good size, and awesome aroma

Are you near the AT. I hike through there in 1990 from Maine to Georgia.

Yes, there are several of the AT segments near me. I picked tons of wild blueberries on one for my birthday. There not very popular these day, so you always have the trail to yourself.

Susan, I've never heard of a Feminello. Where are they available?

Awesome info Silica. Matter of fact I would love to add Femminello Zagara Bianca. Of course not available in the USA. This variety supposedly blooms four times a year. All white flowers and the best in taste. Yup, lots of trees but like I said if I can fine something special, I would make room :)

Maybe I'm lucky and this is one of the common market lemons in Italy? I have two seedlings named Laura and Rosa :) Both look a bit different from each other.

Wow 4 and 5 blooms a year! Even indoors? I've seen the Santa Teresa on the FWG website, but there is very little info about it. I was learning towards a Eureka, but how do I find other Femminellos?

After some google research, I can safely say: I want all the Italian lemons! I am so jealous of people who can just go to Costco and find amazing citrus varieties. My current wish list is:

I already have 2 Meyers, Persian lime, Key lime, Tango, and Satsuma.

I'm supposed to move soon and I'm going to need a separate truck just for my plants.

While we are discussing lemons...I clearly grow all of mine in containers. I've been disappointed with my exceptionally slow Meyer lemon growth and I've read that I should have purchased a non dwarf variety and they will just stay smaller because of the container. I've also read that I should get a semi dwarf Eureka and not a dwarf, but I've heard that there is no such thing as a true dwarf Eureka because they are incompatible with dwarfing rootstock. So much conflicting information on the internets these days. What's a girl to do when she wants to grow her on citrus?

You may want to check Stan Mackenzie farms for the NZ. I heard he had it, as well as finger limes, but does not have them listed on his site.

Costco.com also has a few citrus.

Bear in mind some places may be out of stock until spring.

All Meyer lemons are dwarfs and grow like bushes no mater the root stock.

What is your fert. schedule on the meyer?

Is your Meyer originally a cutting? I don't actually know the differences in growth rate for cuttings versus those grafted on a rootstock but I live in NY zone 7 and my Meyer was profusely throwing up vertical shoots during July and August. Until I hacked almost of all of them down haha.

I recently read a published article about nitrogen uptake by citrus and they use the most nitrogen during leaf expansion and shoot growth. So maybe timing of your fertilizer and the amount you apply may help. In their data, the dry weight yield of the plant plateaus at a certain point but it decreased when they received 200mg or more N per liter of nutrient solution.

So what does the F stand for in FN?

Fertilizer Nitrogen :D there were a lot of terms and units I had to go back and find reference for too

One of the few shorter papers and really interesting! It talked about whether the trees used N the most during root growth or shoot growth because a separate paper by other scientists showed that it used more N during root growth periods..if I'm remembering right

Hurry to four winds! they just got Santa Teresas and New Zealand Lemonades in stock! as well as Genoas and Varigated pink lemons. I just ordered mine!

What they test can help change around fertilization timings if someone wants to try it out especially if you foliar spray and use fast acting synthetic fertilizers. I don't use either yet so I can't test any of this myself

Thanks, but I don't think it stands for the word "Fertilizer" perhaps "Foliar". The article does a poor job of explaining the meaning of "F".

Kvetch, I don't know if it counts for anything but FW has had NZL a few times in the last year and its been nearly a year and a half since they've had the ST. So you might get lucky and they will have it in stock later! the prices are so high for shipping (and I'm on the west coast ) that I held off on getting a Genoa and a few figs I had been eyeing.

I just did a stock check and they only have two left. I hope you guys end up getting one. *fingers crossed* I am so happy that I was at my computer when the email notification was sent. they sell out so damn fast.

In the screenshot I attached it says "Fig.4. Fertilizer N (FN) uptake per gram..."

They used different concentrations of added nitrogen in a nutrient solution so they are labeling it as "Fertilizer" because it was N added through a liter of nutrients

Sammers, I will leave the trees for you and Alanna :) I don't actually use lemons in cooking much but I chose the Meyer because at least the flowers are supposed to smell amazing even if I don't grow lemons. So it was a practical pick for me, but I would love to try eating/drinking lemonade in fruit form! One day in the future, I'll definitely get the nzl

Should I get a genoa instead or just wait for the ST? Like I said, I don't NEED it right now and if a Santa Teresa is really a better variety I can try and be patient.

Alanna, my 2 cents is if you can swing it get the NZL. There's nothing else like it and when you end up getting a ST later you won't have too many similar lemons.

I waited...I did snap up the NZ Lemonade, BUT I did not go crazy and buy the 5 other varieties in my cart. That is not an exaggeration, FWG has 10% off if you spend $120, so I was going to buy 6 trees just to qualify. However, cooler heads prevailed and I am happy with my pending Lemonade delivery.

Susan - I am really interested to try air-layering myself and cannot believe how sweet you are to offer to send me one! I'll keep an eye for a ST in the meantime (probably in spring) and see what I other varieties I can find. Hopefully, my life will be a little more settled then (currently desperately seeking a new job, moving, and taking care of my 82 year old dad) and I can add more trees to my collection with less guilt. It's hard to plan for future trees when I don't know if the new home with be able to provide enough windows and light.

Yay! I am glad you got the NZL! I hope you end up liking it! I know what you mean about having to have reason when filling your cart. I immediately put the ST and the Valentine Pummelo in my cart but hemmed and hawed about adding a Genoa, Golden Nugget, cara cara and a few figs before deciding it would take too much time and hastily checked out with what I had. Its so tempting to try and get the 10% off but with how fast I suspected the ST to sell out (I've been burned with the AFL twice) I knew I couldn't afford to wait. But I am wishing I had at least added the golden nugget but I panicked. . Its crazy how much adrenaline I had going racing against an invisible clock to get that tree. Clearly I have a problem... Do they have meetings for plant addicts? lol And all that didn't even take into consideration that I shouldn't spend all that money on trees right now anyway.

What is AFL??

My bet goes, Like the grapes that the fox could not reach the ST will also probably turn out to be sour. Get the NZL.

Oh, and sorry to hijack your thread...I have not tasted the ST yet, but am looking forward to it. I have lots of other lemon varieties - so I will need creative uses for them soon. I have also heard good things about the bearss lemon (sold my Harris). Ruth (from Harris) described it as having a very fragrant rind and it is a Sicilian cultivar.

I have fruits and used them. The ST is very aromatic, lots of oils in the rind that smell just wonderful when forking with it. Love to use the zest for baking.

Laura, did you happen to ask Ruth if they might be able to offer the others, like ST or NZL? I guess those are more specialty and Harris is more geared towards commercial. One positive note about Harris and Mackenzie are their reasonable ship rates.

Hibiscus, yes I did, and no they could not as of then. She said the bearss is much like the ST, but I've not compared them yet ;-)

Thanks Laura! And no problem :) I like learning new information from the posts I see here so it only feels right to share what interesting things I stumble upon. Sometimes the common sites that show up on the first page of Google repeat the same things and my curiosity isn't satisfied enough. I'm glad she spurred me on to read slower and understand it better.
