Small Velux Skylight - Blind or Not?

I am putting in a new Velux skylight to replace an old no-name one that has seen its day. The skylight is about 36x36. It is over a hallway, but there is a bedroom just a few feet from the skylight. That bedroom's door lets in a lot of light around the edges, and the bed is just a couple feet from the door, so the light gets in the sleeper's eyes early in the morning, though that's mostly in the summer, not so much a problem in the winter.

I am considering Velux's blackout blind for the skylight, which is fixed. But because of the skylight's small size of 36x36, am worried that the stackback on the blind, or the carriage that holds the blind, will appear large in relation to the skylight. I've looked for photos on the internet, but they all show the blind half-closed, so I haven't been able to see what it looks like when the blind is fully opened, and how much space it takes up when fully opened.

Does the blind take up a lot of space on the skylight when fully-open? Will a blind look bad in a small skylight?

I would not put a blind on a hallway skylight. The combination of Low-e and size of that unit will mean that not much in the way of light will be coming through until later in the day. If someone needs to sleep during the day, the room is usually set up for that.

Thank you for your response, but we already know that the skylight is a problem with early morning light for the bedroom that is just a couple feet from it. The door to the bedroom is almost adjacent to the skylight in the hall, and the bed is right next to the door (it's a small bedroom). At 5-6 am May-August, the light comes right into the sleeper's eyes, around the door edges.

The skylight is old and somewhat clouded and stained. I expect the new clear glass skylight to be even brighter. The problem is mostly in the summer. I think my question is whether the blind's stackback when fully open and/or the carriage that holds it will be obtrusive on a 36x36 skylight, so because of that it's not a good choice. Or does the blind fold up to such a small width, that it's not a big deal.

I'm a researcher, and when I built my house recently, I looked into both Solatube and Velux. I ended up going with the Sun Tunnel because it was more cost effective and seemed to be user friendly (I like doing things myself). Lots of people swear by Solatube, but when I went to see their rep., he was deadset on convincing me that I couldn't do the job myself and that I needed professional installation. That almost doubled the price. My only problem with Velux (or rather the HD where I bought it) was that I told them what type of roof I had (metal simulated tile), they ordered the wrong item and I got stuck with it--it's really for a clay tile, not metal. it's not a film, I already checked. and I don't mean literally blue light. I mean cool toned. I find that window and glass vendors are not exactly educated in color theory. if you're color sensitive and truly worried, I'd seek out a lighting architect to help you figure it out. I wish I did. ultimately it boiled down to one major problem for me: the skylight was positioned on a part of the roof where it's deep in a shadow most of the time (a huge design mistake). shadows from sunlight tend to be cool toned. so on a sunny day when the shadow is strong, the light coming into the room is very weak and cool toned (like a dim 5,000K bulb). on a cloudy day, the light is diffused and better. thankfully this spring/summer/early fall, the shadows changed position and the skylights are actually very pretty. the reason why I started this thread was because I noticed the glass itself looks kind of blue-green and wondered if it was affecting the light quality. ultimately, I think the answer to that is not enough to make a difference. if your skylight or solatube is positioned properly, you shouldn't have that problem. I can be confusing when trying to describe things. hope this made sense!

You can order the window with a tint and the older unit most likely does not have Low-e. That Low-e and/or tint will provide some reflection to the intense rays.

You can always add the black out shades after the fact.
