Day 12: My House in August "Favourite"
Comments (16)Thanks, Bonnie_ann! I am fortunate to have a Polish deli about 10 minutes from my house, so that is great for holidays. People drive from neighboring cities to shop there. They have incredible varieties of Polish sausage. I am one of the few in there who doesn't really speak Polish. We did our kitchen around 2009-2010 so I posted a lot of photos then. We have blue pearl granite and then the mosaic glass BS. I put the stainless inserts in behind the stove. Yes, I did the backsplash, not really knowing what I was getting myself into. But the mosaics were on mesh-backed sheets, and the few tiles I needed cut I was able to take back to Lowe's and they did it for me. We just got a new Elextrolux induction since the Samsung induction cooktop died and could not be repaired because the parts were no longer available....See MoreDay 14, My House in August: Metallic
Comments (30)(as for the kippas..actually one's supposed to wear them all the time what's different though is the level of observance. Some do wear it only when praying, celebrating a holiday, etc. Some will wear them all the time..but if a kippah is knitted that's a sign that they are very traditional, yet not truly orthodox. Orthodox would wear black kippahs only..or, in some communities, hats. Obviously here everything's a bit different than in Israel. Including big thing they make out of Chanukkah..:) which is a wonderful holiday that we always try to celebrate, but no, it's not like Christmas, it's not a religious holiday even though it's about faith too, and involves a miracle..and the presents aren't such a huge part of it ..kids customarily do get something. And traditionally it was some money. I guess in order to play with dreidels..:) One has to have something to win and to loose, after all, lol OK where was I? so about knitted kippahs..in Israel people that observe everything yet are not orthodox still, are called either "traditional" or simply "knitted kippahs"..:) They'll always have extra supply in synagogue, very much so, because you're supposed to cover your head there. If you're a woman you should cover your hair too, Some light scarf will do. They usually keep some supply of scarves there as well. Unless you're a girl/woman who's unmarried yet. but little boys are supposed to wear kippahs. I like Bucharian kippahs the best-they're bigger, can look very smart, and usually are covered with some wonderful bright embroidery. Flowers and such. I'd love to see the thing from Turkey, and especially from Moscow..I think I know what it might look like:) Sorry for the big off-topic! I obviously miss home too much.. I love so many things here..the cat mold, the cake keeper, all the lamps, the candlesticks, the dragon, the tin ceiling, the cat door stop, the tea service, the chest..could go on and on..that's one dangerous thread. Sends one hunting.....See MoreDay 21 - My House in August: Light It Up
Comments (21)That's a good idea, Cyn! I have a lamp shop that I've used for years, but never thought to ask them if they know of a person who could make me a new shade using my original frame. I've just looked for replacement shades there, and had my lamps repaired. Thank you for that suggestion. I'm going to call them tomorrow! Speaking of my lamp place, about 20 years ago I had them create this lamp (below) as a surprise Father's Day gift for DH. I found the statue of St. Roc, the patron saint of physicians, in an antique shop. As DH is a physician, I thought it would make the perfect gift for him. (Sigh) He was not as thrilled as I'd hoped he would be, to say the least. Being raised Catholic, I've been around saint stories my entire life. But, DH, who was raised Southern Baptist, was not. To him, it just looked like an old man, hoisting up his robe to point at a cut on his leg. Not! But, over the years, living here in New Mexico and with a Catholic wife, he's come around a bit. St. Roc is proudly displayed on the buffet in our dining room. And, I still love him!...See MoreDay 25 - My House in August: Art
Comments (38)We call him "the Green Man" but he isn't really green anymore. He's a woodblock on fabric, done by the Art Professor at the University of Taiwan in the late 60s. DH purchased him at an art gallery on an r and r in Taiwan when he was stationed in Vietnam. It cost him $50. He was only 19. What 19 year old soldier buys a picture like this? Most bring home Elvis on black velvet! It's always hung in our house mostly in the dining room....See Moremaddielee
