moving globmaster for iris bed
Comments (6)I had the same problem last year. I moved the alliums after their leaves yellowed, all 12 of them, and only one returned! They ARE huge leaves, so I also found out. You think Globemasters are big? Try planting White Giants (name should have given me a clue, duh)! Theirs are twice as big, and I planted them in a rather small bed. Needless to say, I couldn't wait to move them lol. They are lovely, but they do need lots of room to grow. Then you have to have them planted in a place where you don't mind waiting for the huge foilage to die down so you can clip them off. Just one of my newbie mistakes lol. pic of before bloom: you can see the HUGE leaves within the bed fugly! pic of blooms, as you can see the leaves kind of die down before some blooms. What a train wreck! I have since taken care of the situation lol!...See MoreStarting a New Iris Bed
Comments (2)Claudia, Since the bed has apparently been growing irises for a while already, chances are the soil is depleted of certain nutrients. I recommend you collect a soil sample and have a soil test run by your county extension service so you know exactly what you're starting with. That's really the only way to know for sure what your soil needs in the way of amendments. Overfertilization can damage your soil and poison your plants, and underfertilization can leave your plants lacking for essential nutrients. A soil test will make specific recommendations for fertilizers and amendments to bring your soil into optimal condition for growing irises. Comments (3)I've found I get little bloom the first season after planting new rhizomes (or dividing old ones) - generally one out of three. The third year is the magic one for me. For instance I moved in summer 2001 and replanted all my irises in their new home, then added tons of new varieties in 2002. 2003 was pretty good for blooms, but 2004 was unbelieveable. The garden was overflowing with irises. Of course they all had to be dug that year too s the clumps were enormous. I think you'll see lots of flowers this year and even more next. Comments (8)I can see this year just with the small amount of bloom there first year that this iris bed will be just stunning given time. The entire middle backyard that I made last year out of what used to be my veggie garden has just turned out so well. I have all those daylily sections, some with new ones and the late bloomers section that I moved over to the back. Then I just added lilies this spring. And I had spring bulbs in there and intend to add more this fall. The Dutch Iris section has lots of bloom stalks so should be lovely. The entire thing has turned out well even if I was complaining this spring that the iris section wasn't growing. It is doing better than I first thought and the Dutch Iris in there do add lots of color....See Moreorganic_kitten
