saving money building a new home
Comments (25)Forgot to add that he saved us money by incorporating all of our needs and many wants without going over in sq footage. He also came up with architectural details that would give the house character very inexpensively. He loaded us up on storage and made the most use out of stadard windows. Also incorporated brick and stone with hardi in a way that kept the expense down but provided a huge visual impact. It is also unique from the other houses in the neighborhood and area, but still blends nicely so that if we ever resale we will standout among the homogenous designs most builders put up in our area. So that will payoff later. I have had someone on my hoa with a house significantly bigger than mine rave over the design and wish she could move in. Also he could have...but we chose not to do this... make it so the first floor was the only floor finished so that we could finish the second and basement later without anyone being the wiser. However we lost our minds and now are finishing the whole basement....See MoreDoorknob conundrum
Comments (6)What a nice idea! I love old doorknobs. Since you may not get around to re-doing your downstairs doorknobs right away, why not take your time and see if you can come up with some more antique ones for the upstairs? You can find reasonably priced antique doorknobs (as well as reproductions) on eBay and Craigslist, in architectural salvage stores, antique stores, and even yardsales (if you're in an area with a lot of older homes that are being "upgraded" or demolished). On CL, check the Free category for old doors that are being given away as well as the Materials [i.e. Building Materials] category. In eastern Massachusetts where I live, I've seen old doors with hardware go for about $20 apiece. You may even find some solid wood doors that wouldn't have to be retrofitted. (Just be aware that if antique doors are painted, at least some of the layers are likely to be lead paint.) Also, don't worry about finding door knobs that exactly match. My old house has several different styles of doorknobs, including one set that is pale lavender. (Unfortunately, I didn't notice this until I had already painted that bedroom green.) You'd want to have the rosettes or door plates be similar, of course. P.S. If you do decide to buy new, search online for antique hardware -- there are lots of sites that are less expensive that RH....See MoreBack-Up House Battery/Generator Conundrum
Comments (25)LOL. Getting back to fuel, I do wonder about diesel. Wonderful engines etc and probably the go-to for commercial power backup but I wonder about the fuel life in terms of standing....it does go off after time, and I suspect the standby maintenance is bigger - and maintenance is something many probably don't factor into costs. I wonder if you can get the special diesel that doesn't include the road tax and is cheaper? The gas equivalent here in Canada is called "purple gas" but don't know if there's a diesel equivalent. If it was legal to do so and you were committed to having the tank topped off regularly, or had two tanks, I suppose you could, theoretically, have a diesel vehicle and use the fuel from tank A) when it was getting old, keeping tank B) full, then swap and use up tank B) - I believe you can have such fuel tested too. Reading the Costco fliers I thought the Natural gas gensets sounded appealing - no dangerous fuel storage, no old fuel to get rid of, but then you are reliant on the outside gas supply. I suppose propane beats this, but how long does IT keep?...See MoreWhat to expect at the new home design center?
Comments (11)It is laughable how these things work. Salesman? YES they are. Here is the dumbest strategy the home salesperson tried to use on me. She said, "Well, you have $xx,xxx ( many thousands) left to spend." "What?" I said. She said, "Oh yes. Typically our buyers spend 20% over the price of the home on upgrades. " It is a strategy that psychologically gives a person permission to spend. I said, "Not me.'" (As a side note, I built my own homes in the past and recently helped a friend build his house. I just did a MAJOR rebuild of my current home. Plus for years I have studied the latest design trends. But never have been under the thumb of a design center. )...See Moreapple_pie_order
