Nectarines----)gone...tis the season for chopping
Comments (8)I'm right with you Frank. It's too much work to take care of trees that produce fruit you don't like, or don't produce much of anything. I pulled all my apricots last year, along with some plums and peaches. This year the only tree on probation is Blazingstar peach. The fruit is just too tiny (about plum size, seriously). I did overcrop it a bit, but I've had the same load on other trees that still produced 2 3/4" fruit. Apparently it's enough of a problem, the developers (Fruit Acres) have said they are going to drop this cultivar from their list. Still, the little plum sized fruits on Blazingstar taste good, so I may keep it (if I can get anybody to buy them). I'm just now trying a couple nects. Have one of the Harrow series nectarines in the ground now, and ordered a Honey Blaze for next Spring....See MoreFarmers Markets- tis the season! :)
Comments (16)There are actually two good ones in that area, Hallet's my favorite is the one just south of Adams, that is another about a mile north of Adams that has a nice selection of perenials, both do actually. Hallet's seems to have the nicest plants I have seen around here. I went to a local plant swap and sale today put on the a group of church ladies in Adams. What fun I had. I bought columbine, bleeding heart, Astilbe for fifty cents each, Hosta for a dollar. large pots of red poppies with buds for a dollar. Ispent a whopping $13.00 and had to make three trips to the car. The plants where small. but healty and I know they will survive the cold winters here. Helped the chuch ladies out too. I am going to take them a bunch of my leftover seedlings in the morning on my way to work, I had such good luck I have way more then I need. Tell them the raglady sent you, they will get a kick out of it, I am one of thier best customers....See MoreTis the Season to Say What You Mean...Or Just Be Mean...Or...
Comments (34)Well, today is going much better. (Of course I am probably jinxing myself.) I went to the library and spoke to a few acquaintances who all remembered me and none of whom told me I had ratty hair or pimples. The Kindle Fire session went more smoothly, thanks to Frances I think I have figured out a thing or two or three. I think the problem is just plain old slowness. What I took for nonresponse is just plain slowness. I need to wait...wait...wait...wait a little more...voila! Being used to lightning fast responses on my work and home computers, I have become spoiled. It's not that bad, but it is definitely slow. And my two Kindles work differently - my old Kindle can receive books just about anywhere but my new Kindle Fire can only receive books if it has a wireless connection. Except for library books, which are a whole different animal. Yes, it is a learning experience. Anyway, I am tired of Christmas, not the spiritual beautiful part, but the I-don't-have-time-to-be-nice-to-you-because-I-have-better-things-to-do part. I will be glad when the holidays are over and my friends don't hang up on me because they are busy and stressed. I don't have the busy stressed part, because I pretty deliberately eliminated it quite some time ago. For instance, we don't exchange gifts in my family as a general rule. We all agreed quite some time ago that we all have too much stuff. But today is beautiful. It is snowing lightly and looks gorgeous. I'm so happy to have some snow that does not come part and parcel with a huge and ferocious storm. This is lightly falling, moderate temp, no wind, only half-an-inch expected snow. And yes, this is all tongue-in-cheek, I'm hope I have generated a bit of laughter!...See MoreTis the Season to be Jelly
Comments (7)Butch T Scorpion Jelly Reaper Jelly Jellied Devil's Tongue Fire & Ice (Peppers & Ice Wine) Peppered up Merlot Pink Champagne with a Bite The Mix Jelly (all of the assorted peppers from the end of season that I just processed together out of laziness) and not in the pic but made it today, the recipe for Cranberry Sauce here (sans Onions) - I called it Gobblers Final Revenge I also bake lots of breads with hot peppers. I do not dry my peppers. I chop them and store them in the freezer in those little zip bags that look like the ones you see in the movies that coke dealers use. I have three shelves of the little wonders in my freezer right now... Lucky me! Lori p.s. I don't care for hot or spicy, so I just grow, jelly, bake and pass the stuff on to people - friend or foe!...See MoreConnieMay ON Z6a
