Masonry Veneer (faux stone) down to grade?

B Mac

We love the look of stone rather than exposed foundation around the base of our house, but I'm seeing conflicting things about whether taking masonry veneer down to grade is a good idea.

Code seems to say it should generally sit at 4" above (to me that gives a "stuck on" look I'd like to avoid) but I suspect there's a way to do it well to isolate it from getting the siding damp.

Anyone have experience in this area by chance? I'm convinced at this point that there's hardly anything the GW community *doesn't* have experience with!
