Windows Design Dilemma dining room

Window Treatments for Bay Window Sitting Room & Dining Room

I am struggling with window treatments for both my a sitting room and dining room which are both side by side, separated by a foyer. Both rooms have bay windows and I think it would be best for the window treatments to match since they are so close together. The back side of the house has plantation shutters on all windows. However, the front side of the house (where these two rooms are located) does not have any window treatments yet. Would it be best to put plantation shutters on these windows as well, so the entire house matches? We must have privacy for these front windows and there is a large amount of afternoon sun that comes through so we will need something to block that as well. I think white wood blinds would work also, but i'm concerned that they would look odd with the plantation shutters throughout the rest of the house. I have also thought of jute roller shades, or bamboo shades but i am concerned this will not give us enough privacy and block the sunlight.

I really love this look of these drapes, so whatever I do for blinds/shades will need to go well with something similar to this:

There is nothing at all wrong with doing your windows as the inspiration photo you posted and also having plantations in the same house!

They appear to have a Roman shade and that's ok too as your curtains would be made to not close I presume, but be decorative. When pulled up they are decorative as in your inspiration photo and down they block what you want them to.

Otherwise, you could go with a shade such as the Vignette by Hunter Douglas (or similar) which mimics a roman shade and can be opened and closed to let light in vs. pulled up and down... naturally, it also pulls up and down as well (Inspirations photos only) :)

or something similar to photo 3 in neutral Vignettes (or similar brand shades) with a fixed neutral Roman outside mounted decorative shade whether relaxed Roman or Traditional Roman. This decorative shade is a but busy to me as is the color... again, an inspiration photo...

Thank you all! I'm glad you were able to enjoy our space. : ) The Chandy was new from ebay, and looked like it had leopard spots when it came. Yikes, nothing like the "antique bronze" type description. DH cured that with some spray paint. The chest in the window is from a local yard sale. Yes, we sit in these little chairs by the windows often. The secretary desk was my grandmother's. It looked fine in her low-ceilinged living room, but it needed a little extra height in our space, thus the basket of goodies and lights on top. The table was my mom's, and about a year ago we put laminate on the top out of desperation when the veneer got reeeally bad. I'm still looking for a larger table to replace it, but for now, it works, and it is super-wipeable for everyday use. :-) Just for kicks, some of you might remember When the dining room looked like this. (You can now sort of see that we put closets on either side of the window at one end of the room instead of how we considered doing them in this old discussion.)

I would suggest Hunter Douglas cellular shades for each window. They have several styles to choose from. They should be mounted into the ceiling and measured and hung professionally. The measure would fit each window individually and perfectly. You could have just top down or top down bottom up which would give you the most flexibility. If you choose, you could do a simple valance at the top, inside the bay, to hide the hardware.

Thank you for all the suggestions! I should clarify that these window treatments would be primarily aesthetic - I want the room to look more "finished". We live down a steep hill, so privacy is not an issue. We use the room for reading or it's another space to use for conversation when we have guests. It's fairly small - we currently have three while leaning bookshelves in the room and will likely get rid of at least 1, possibly 2. Also replacing the ottoman with a glass coffee table. Would you stick with white for the window treatments, or should we use it as an opportunity to get some color in the room? Currently have a dark couch in the room, it doesn't really fit, but it's relatively new and it's what we have. I am hoping I can soften it by adding nice throws and pillows (not the ones we currently have) so I am open to suggestions on color schemes. Thanks a million!

Hey There: Window Coverings and the design of the house must go together and furthermore you must keep the function in mind. In you case I do recommend to layer the window coverings...

As I can see in your pictures, you might have a privacy problem if your don't close your coverings, but of course your don't want to sit all day in the dark. So as a first line of defense (literally spoken of course) you go with minimalistic pleated or honeycomb shades. They fit nicely into the window casing and operate bottom up and top down. This will give you privacy and light management and allow you to look outside and enjoy nature around your home.

As the second layer you can opt for curtains to the side - either operable or just decorative. This combination is not to heavy to take over the rooms. Stay in lighter colors but don't match them...lighter for the blinds and a bit darker for the curtains.
