What could cause slowness with keyboard/mouse?

Win10 Laptop hooked to separate monitor. Ran fine for two years. The keyboard and mouse started acting sluggish to the point that I found it difficult to type. When I use the scroll wheel same thing. Takes forever and very annoying. Longitech wireless.

I thought the keyboard was the problem and ordered a new one. The keyboard was a few years old. Changed the batteries, etc.

Installed new setup and the same thing is going on.

I haven't run into this before except when batteries are low. New setup/new batteries.

What do you mean by "installed a new setup"?

For some it could be malware but that's not so frequent if you're using a good security system. It can be an over-burdened system - uncleared cache in the browser, too many temp files undeleted, etc..

Right click on a blank part of the taskbar, Left Click on Task Manager, then click on the tab that says Performance.

What percentage numbers are shown under CPU, memory, and disk?

I bought a new keyboard/mouse. Same problem is happening. Doesn't happen when I use the up/down arrows to scroll but happens with the scroll on the mouse.

Here's a screen shot. Does this say anything?
Dam. don't know why the print is so small. Didn't look like that on my screen.

"How often do people water their ES?" ostrich, my 3 ES are also in a bed at the back of our house, facing the east. They seem to wilt like crazy when it's hot and humid. Myself, I was wondering if this was normal. But to answer your question, I WAS watering our ES some each day, in late morning for the most part. Then I worried that I was overdoing it, even though everything seemed happy. When I cut back, I saw wilt. I didn't think the soil was too dry, either. It's helpful to hear how others are watering!

I googled this stuff too - and googled removing or cleaning it - no results except to purchase it. I think I'll have to call the company on Monday and see if they have any ideas. I like the idea of the heating pad - but I should probably find out what heat does to this. I've always hated these slimy, gooey toys - they often stain - but this seems ridiculous. To have the thinned sections harden like that. Kudzu- The explanation was that my daughter had a friend over yesterday and they were playing with the goo. They were in my husband's den - which my 10yo daughter seemed surprised to hear today that it was off limits to her and her friends. It's filled with guitars and recording equipment (it's always been off limits unless she's in there with her father). She and her friend were just in there - and decided to stop playing with the stuff - so they just put it down on the desk - on the keyboard and mouse - never occurred to them that was a problem. We're trapped on our block in a historic storm of 26" at the bottom of a hill. The public schools are open tomorrow - yet neighborhoods remain snowed in. I am just so incredulous about that - that my daughter blithingly going in a den that's off limits - with goo - and innocently leaving it on the keyboard as though that's a sufficient place to leave it - seems equally baffling. Did the topsy-turvyness of the snow storm effect their thinking? perhaps. Her friends father decided to drive her here (down a 2 block hill of snow) in a 4-wheel drive vehicle. He walked her here and told he he'd gotten stuck at the top of the hill. we just learned he'd been stuck just around the corner - 3 houses away - too embarrassed to tell us he'd ventured down the hill. Unbeknownst to us our neighbors spent an hour helping him dig out. If I find anything out about the goo, I'll post back. Thanks. Lynn.

If the problem is only upstairs, then the pressure at your home's water inlet is not the problem. Call back the plumber that did the install work for you. It sounds like the issue is only one faucet. If that is the case, deal with that faucet. If the problem is more extensive, you are going to have to, in one location, carefully explain precisely what is happening or we can't help you (and likely neither can your plumber) - so far we've heard multiple things on multiple posts and I'm afraid we're not adept at mind-reading.

The only thing that stands out to me is that Firefox seems to be swollen in size. Also, what security program are you using?

Have you cleared Firefox's cache and related garbage lately? Try that. Tools, Options, Privacy, click on the blue words that say Clear All Current History.

Also, if you have Malwarebytes, try running that to clear out some of the retained unnecessary files.

It's a bit puzzling, Jane, because mouse and keyboard commands are minuscule pieces of information that take almost no resources to handle. The communication to the PC from these peripherals either works or it doesn't so that if it does but the PC's response is sluggish, that suggests (to hardware unsophisticated me) that the problem is on the PC end of things. Let's see what happens with a bit of cleanup.

Also, maybe try a session with a different browser first, see if there's a difference in performance.

I agree, that's why I was puzzled. I cleared FF and did a CClean. The only AV I have is what's installed, Defender. I noticed I have all this Dell crap which I will shut off or uninstall if I can find services, lol.

This was a Win 7 laptop I updated to Win 10. Its probably 3-4 yrs old.

As I type, I notice no hesitation and the scroll seems to be working.

Odd, I'll do some other work and post back, but it feels responsive.

I'm glad it's working better.

Windows Defender is a poor security program. It ranks very low when compared to other products when all undergo testing and performance assessments. Much better protection is available at no cost and maybe requiring only 10 minutes or less of your time to get and install.

First choice - check the website of your internet service provider (or call customer service). Many furnish top quality security programs to customers for no charge. As an example, I get Norton (an excellent performer) from Comcast.

Second choice - Look at the following link for ratings of free versions of security software. While I think these are maybe a step down from the paid versions of the same programs, all are better than Windows Defender. Choose one of the three from left to right for the top rated ones - Avast, AVG, Bitdefender.

I would say it's most probably a malware/adware or something like that since the CPU usage and Disk usage are very low per the screenshots you sent, despite the resources used by Firefox, it should not be the reason.

In the meantime you can also try to check the degree of fragmentation of your filesystem as you said you had this computer a while.

Vant, I don't think its malware as everything works fine except the keyboard/mouse.

Thanks to Whip, it is working well. It still has its moments but I'm suspicious of the wireless connection. Maybe the USB?

I run into problems with my wireless signal now and then, even my phone will use LTE inside the house which it shouldn't. Maybe the router?

Anyway, works much better now, I guess a cleanup was in order.

Wireless dongles are sometimes dodgy, more frequently than USB sockets. But you said you bought new stuff so did that include a new dongle? As I mentioned before, I believe if the connection is functioning, it would function with immediate response and not with a delay. It is digital stuff after all.

How old is the PC? Is there a different USB socket you can move the dongle to? Do you have a wired keyboard or mouse to try in that socket, if so, how does it work?

A delay from keyboard or mouse should similarly have nothing to do with a dodgy wireless signal or internet speed. Is the internet connection slow if you're in the same room as the router? How old is the router? What internet capacity speed does your connection provide?
