Anne Belovich's book on ramblers is available on Amazon NOW!
Comments (13)The book arrived. It is more than we might have hoped for, and in a few niggling places it's less. First there are pictures, possibly more images space per page is taken up with rose pictures than in any other rose book. The quality is good, although close up the images aren't 'sharp', they are pictures of rose blooms, almost always multiple blooms and to my eye the colors are true. The intro is charming about why she loves roses and how this book came to be. This is not the book for discussion of groups of ramblers. This is a book with pictures of roses and their descriptions. The descriptions remind me of rose people talking...what makes this one memorable, is the personal experiences that accompany the more mundane descriptives: where this has been expecially beautiful and well grown ( the rose Breeze Hill on the wall of Grigan in southern France", page 38.) The roses are listed in alphabetical order. Not all of the roses have photographs. There's a magnificent two page spread of close ups of R. multiflora carnea which I gasped at with pleasure on my way to try to find R. gigantea, which I couldn't find. Rosedom needed this book. Her "suggested reading list" in the back shows how this motley class, or not a class any longer, so call it a group (maybe) has escaped any systematic coverage. This book will make you want to grow more ramblers, it will show you the bloom, it will tell you the size and repeatness of the blooms and it will hold a place on our bookshelves for decades to come. And this was written just as I glanced through it. I'll refine this for a full review on Amazon....See MoreBolero and Milwaukee's Calatrava for sale now on Amazon
Comments (7)My Bolero is equally well grown, small but vigorous, with a well developed root system. For the price, it is a good deal. Somehow, I suspect Stargazer Perennials is doing tissue culture themselves or purchasing tissue cultured plugs, and growing them on. My Bolero does not appear too have started life as a cutting. I should enquire about this possibility. I have many young fig trees that were tissue cultured. I like this method of propagation because parent tissue is cleansed of pathogens as an initial step in the tissue culture process. The resulting plant gets off to a disease free start, carrying no harmful matter that was harbored in the parent. Moses...See MoreApricot Candy, Wow!
Comments (27)Words of wisdom, living simply and faithfully, and some rose talk, too…what an inspirational post! My Apricot Candy was a new baby this spring. Not many blooms survived the Japanese Beetles earlier in the season, but beetles are finally at a reasonable number to control now, so I can post pictures from the weekend. Color and ruffled edges remind me a lot of the Just Joey that was previously in its place. I can already tell Apricot Candy is a much better grower and much healthier than JJ, though. So far, it has been very bs resistant for me, and although still small, seems it will have a nice bush shape and will be well clothed in clean foliage. May everyone have a Blessed day!!! Apricot Candy this weekend: And one from last weekend: And for Moses and Lilyfinch, some zinnias amongst the sunflowers in the vegetable garden this weekend. Okra, eggplant, peppers & watermelon are about the only veggies still going, but the zinnias just don't quit :)...See MoreBolero available right now from Stargazer Perennials on Amazon....
Comments (5)Lilyfinch, That's great news about your baby roses. Mine are just beginning to stir out of dormancy. I'm up to 3 Boleros so far, all own root. I actually hope they, being own root, will stay on the short side so that their role as front of the bed roses is not undermined. Moses...See MoreKristine LeGault 8a pnw
