Black Pearl Honed Granite or Charcoal Soapstone Quartz
Comments (12)"Quartz is more durable and doesn’t require any maintenance though" What causes you to say that? Black Pearl granite doesn't require any maintenance either. It is one of the denser granites, and you won't even have to seal it. I challenge you to say why quartz is more durable than Black Pearl granite. As to fingerprints, I thought it's the honed solid dark color that causes the fingerprints to show, not whether it's granite or quartz? Black pearl granite is not the same as Westmanmarine's Absolute Black granite. It has more of a pattern so should not show fingerprints the way Westmanmarine's Absolute Black granite does which is indeed known for showing fingerprints. I did a quick search online, and some people say Black Pearl does not show fingerprints, and some say it does, so no consensus there. Quartz will not be as heatproof as granite. Though I have granite counters and use trivets regardless. To me, this choice is one of aesthetics. Quartz and granite have a different look, and which one do you like better?...See MoreHow to clean Pental honed and Silestone suede quartz
Comments (19)I can only comment on your statement that manufacturers wouldn't manufacture problematic stuff. I certainly wouldn't rely on that in terms of what are cosmetic issues of maintenance. People use counters in all kinds of different ways. Many people never cook and therefore could use high maintenance materials with no issues. Some people have housekeepers who clean. Others have different standards so fingerprints and splotches wouldn't bother them. Not the same thing but I am having marble counter installed in my master bath. I know it is higher maintenance than porcelain might be but my use for the master bath is not as hard as it might be for others since I live alone - don't dye my hair and I also am fine with the marble acquiring a patina. FWIW, I opted for honed marble floor and counter both for appearances and also because to the extent it etched, it would be less noticeable with a honed surface. Other people might make different choices of a material based on how they are using the room and also what their tolerance is for normal wear and tear....See MoreDoes anyone have Silestone Charcoal Soapstone, suede?
Comments (27)Thanks everyone for taking time to share your experience and pics. We are just about to order charcoal soapstone Silestone... dithering on gloss vs. suede. We are very messy and although I love the matte look... thinking polish is more sensible for us. We are doing white perimeter cabinets (BM Swiss coffee) with a dark stained island/Silestone White Storm counter for that. Hmmm... I think White Storm is available as Polished finish only. Do you think the perimeter and island countertops be the same finish? (either matte or polish?)...See MoreIs it safe to use quartz as a backsplash behind a range?
Comments (89)This thread has been very informative for me as we are just starting a kitchen reno, so thank you to all contributors. We plan to do a quartz backsplash, including behind a 30" wide residential gas cooktop (not a range or stove). Please bear with me as I continue to explain! I looked at the specs of the cooktop I was planning to order. Based on those specs and assumption the new quartz countertop depth is 25.5" (I know assumptions are risky, but since 25.5" is what we have now and considered standard, I'm going with that for this example), my calculations are: 25.5" (countertop depth) - 21.25" (cooktop depth) - 3" (min distance from rear wall) - 1.875" (min distance from counter front) = -0.625" Which means I'm 5/8" short, and this isn't taking into account the thickness of the quartz backsplash, which I believe should not be included in the 3" from rear wall guideline from the cooktop manufacturer. Sorry if I'm hurting anyone's brain with math today! Just looking for some validation my logic is correct in how I should be calculating. And also curious if my belief the distance from the rear of the cooktop to the front of the quartz backsplash (not wall) should be 3." I plan to look for a different cooktop, hopefully one that is closer to 20" deep and add the backguard just to be safe (thanks to @Elizabeth Alvarez Sell for sharing her backguard photo)!...See Moreamontagut
