Yeah unless the are soft and essentially fall off the tree by themselves, the astringence is awful.

I would also gently suggest that in future you ask before tasting. Granted that this was planted with other fruit trees, but there are parts of edible plants that are toxic (rhubarb), and many wild and ornamental plants that are toxic, some to the degree that your licking part of the plant could have dire consequences. So keep that in mind next time you are tempted.

Thanks. I don't know too many gardeners who lick their plants, but may be it is worth mentioning that, for example in case of Aconitum, according to Wikipedia "Poisoning may occur following picking the leaves without wearing gloves".

Glad I don't grow any of those.

What other plants belong to the group?

More plants are toxic to some degree than those that are not. Ones to avoid sampling are most that produce berries (holly, daphne, sweet box, yews, honeysuckle, pokeweed, Virginia creeper, cotoneaster).

There are other forms of toxicity besides just ingestion. Many plants contain oils or saps that can create an allergic reaction to those who are sensitive when they come into contact with them - stinging nettles, poison ivy and euphorbias are common ones but there are scores more.

Here is one list of poisonous plants......note the number of fruits and vegetables that are considered mildly to seriously toxic if you eat the wrong part or if improperly prepared for consumption. The important take-away from this is if you do not know for sure that the plant or plant part is safely edible, don't eat it!!

Just a "for instance", but to reinforce the warning that you must know which parts are toxic: apple seeds contain cyanide. Admittedly, not many people are going to eat 200 apple seeds, but it shows that even familiar fruits can be dangerous in the right (wrong?) amounts or the right (wrong) parts. Acorns are toxic from the tannins they contain, yet make a fine edible flour or mash if treated correctly. Cashews nuts are HIGHLY poisonous, until treated. People in India who pick and process the nuts are regularly burned by the urushiol (the active ingredient in poison ivy) in the raw cashews. It impacts not just their skin, but their lungs and eyes. So you see it's important to know your food ;)
