Preparing drywall (after removing old backsplash) for new backsplash

We've removed our old backsplash and there are small areas where the drywall paper has torn a bit, but the inside plaster of the drywall is not actually exposed. After some reading, I'm confused exactly what we should do to prepare it for the new backsplash. From my research, this is what I think I should do:

1. Remove all bits of paper and old mastic/thinset.

2. Smooth drywall by applying skimcoat of drywall mud. Possibly sand?

3. Seal by painting a layer of primer.

4. Install tile, caulk, grout.

Is it necessary to prime before a skimcoat of drywall mud as well? I've seen suggestions that it is easier to replace the drywall, but we just installed new kitchen cabinets and it seems like we should've done this first if that was the route we wanted to take.

I'm open to all suggestions, especially if what I've listed is not correct!

Thanks.
