Removing backsplash. Tile & Drywall removed. OK?

Demo has started. When removing the tile backsplash, does it sound right that they cut out the entire tile and drywall area in one piece (rather than removing the tiles) leaving large rectangular holes?? I wasnÃ¯Â¿Â½t expecting this, maybe itÃ¯Â¿Â½s okay but I never thought about how to remove the backsplash.

It's a heck of a lot easier to remove it all in one piece than it is to try to laboriously patch all the holes that removing it piecemeal would entail. (It also lets you more easily run the wires to your new undercabinet lights.) You can just replace it with a large single patch of either drywall or cement board, prime it, and be done and ready for the new backsplash on top of it.

Hi!

We just removed our old backsplash. Dh was hoping that we could walk away with just some patch work on the existing drywall. hah! We tried prying out some of the tiles, but we quickly realized that cutting it out was the solution. So, we cut it out, drywall and all. Dh is now installing the new drywall.

We'll I'm no expert, but I'd probably just paint over the area with hydroban and then set my tile with thinset. Or if you want, a very thin skim of thinset over the rough areas, then the hydroban, then tile with thinset. Now where the tile will join the painted surface I would make sure I had a nice finish on the drywall to accept the paint. I'd want this nice wall area to begin under the last row of tile so that no hydroban shows or rough surface shows.

Protect your wall tiles with cardboard and take a hammer to the row of counter top tiles that are against the wall. Break them up good. Wearing gloves and using putty knives and screwdrives pull out all the little pieces of tile from that row closest to the wall. Wiggle them out from under the backsplash tile, they should come out fairly easily. This clears a distance the thickness of the tile for the counter to pivot up upon removal before it contacts and loads your backsplash tiles. If that proves to not be enough set the depth right on a circular saw or rotozip and zip through the cement board and pry that off too. It will take more finesse then normally is used when demoing kitchens but with a little caution, it should be very doable.

I guess it depends how much damage is done, hubby was way too aggressive taking off old tile. We had to have a drywall guy come in and install new drywall, and the seam tape had to be covered before tile man would do work. Some tile men do the repair of dry wall, but it sounds like you are doing the tile yourself? If you only have a few small holes, your solution sounds good to me.

Remove it - the tile adhesive will not stick as well, AND it might not be able to support the weight of the tile.

Replacing the drywall is way easier and less time consuming than patching all the gouges and scrapes. It just looks drastic, not to worry.
