Contractor Satement Regarding HardiePlank Siding
Comments (19)muddy, The battens are 1x3 pre-primed pressure treated. I'm not sure why that decision was made, as that was on DH's plate, not mine. I can try to figure out pictures in the next couple days if you'll bear with me. I'm still figuring out the new camera. :) The only thing about my siding that I'm not crazy about is the caulking product we used. It was labeled as paintable, but it clearly didn't mean that it excelled in that department, because it is a PITA to get the paint to adhere to the caulk, which, since you have to caulk every seam, is everywhere. On the up side, once I experimented a little, I learned that spraying the house lightly 3 times usually did the trick. I am going to back and do touch-ups in the spring. As far as install was concerned, the PT wood was nice because its rough texture made it easier to caulk because I didn't need to try to make the caulk smooth, I just rubbed it to match the texture of the wood, if any of that makes sense... Will post pics ASAP....See MoreHardie/Certainteed Stucco Siding Panels
Comments (6)We went this route after having done stucco on another part of the house. A lot faster, cheaper for labor, and I trust it just a little more. We did have to give some to the look of the project, but when we hired the carpenters, everything ended up going faster than we expected. With that the case, we said go ahead with the hardipanels and let's just finish it instead of finding more people to do the stucco work. We're done with the project, which is a huge relief for us. We're also pretty pleased with the results. A slight seam here and there (expect for the big horizontal one) isn't hurting anyone. True, our project wasn't exactly traditional. I think a small part of me wishes we had held off for all stucco. Only a very small part.... http://www.draftymanor.com/house/ links to all the house projects. Comments (1)Vertical panel siding joints are always shiplapped and must fall on a stud. Sealant can be used if it is carefully applied to the lap. There should always be an underlayment behind the siding that laps over the z flashing at the horizontal joints. Don't expect plywood panel siding to be the equal of horizontal siding or other cladding materials placed over underlayment and sheathing in terms of long-term weather resistance. A water-borne acrylic latex primer should be fine unless the surface of the plywood is rough or damaged in which case it might be better to use a solvent-based, oil-modified primer (commonly referred to as alkyd or oil-based)....See MoreJames Hardie Lap Siding - Post Installation Questions on Appearance
Comments (12)those nails should never be done like that. I posted a huge PDF installation file link. did you ever read it? I mean, you keep coming here to us asking for advice, and we've advised you. Not sure what else you want us to say? From where I sit, the install isn't done up to specs. Have you talked over the last issues w/the installer?? Why not call and speak to a Hardie rep. I'm sure if you sent him these pics, they could advise you about their products. those corner pieces don't look right. as stated previously, nail heads should not be exposed. This is just wrong. here is a corner like yours. do you see any nail heads??? Nope. I've posted diff corner finishes: Hardie Mitered Corners. Hardie Corners This just looks like water damage waiting to happen Here's how a properly done window/siding looks: what happens when water gets in between this gap and just sits there or seeps in behind? have no idea if proper flashing was used. Does this one look like yours? nope. This is a Drip Cap. Not sure if that's what was used w/yours I don't know what to say except I'd report all of these mistakes and issues to whomever is in charge. And I wouldn't pay a dime until all of these are fixed...See MorePPF.
