Grout color selection for shower/tub walls, mosaic and floor

Seeking advice on the selection of grout color for bathroom being tiled as we speak (photos):

1) Installer mentioned using Prism grout for this job...WHICH COLOR would you suggest? Leaning towards "Snow White" or "Bright White" to blend well between field tiles while also highlighting the mosaic? Just not sure??

2) Should we use same grout color for both the field tiles and the mosaic to tie it all together?

3) Field tile for floor and shower walls is the same...should the grout color selected be the same?

[Field tiles are AKDO Mark Gypsum and Mosaic tiles are Artistic Tile Little Satch]

I think matching the colors would be appropriate... Snow White and bright white are all preference based decisions...

I would probably research manufactures for grout so you can make an educated decision

Grouts are generally classified as sanded (cementitious) or unsanded. Both can be used indoors or out and on walls or floors. Use sanded grout for grout joints 1/8 inch up to 5/8 inch. Use unsanded grout for grout joints up to 1/8 inch. Grout is available premixed and ready to use or in powder form (mixed with water as you need it). If you use powdered grout, take care not to use too much water when mixing as this could weaken the grout. Read and follow the product instructions carefully.

Acrylic grout is an option for wet areas. It's intended to be mildew-resistant and retains its color well.

Epoxy grout is perhaps less DIY-friendly than the other grouts available. It's a common choice for countertops due to its hardness. Epoxy grout doesn't need to be sealed

Regarding color choices ...

Use grout to match or contrast your tile color – the choice is yours.

Unless sealed, lighter colors often show stain more easily. Darker grouts may fade over time. Make sure your grout color can be used with your tile. More porous tiles could absorb coloring from the grout.

Tintable grouts are a newer option to pre-colored grout in indoor applications. Tints are added to a light or dark grout base for a custom color.

Sealing grout as a final step prevents staining and keeps out moisture. Make sure you get the correct sealer for your grout and that the grout has cured before you apply it. See the grout package label for details.

I think that contrasting grout is a current trend, but that doesn't mean that it's necessarily modern looking. Whether it is modern looking or not depends on a lot of other things. In fact, I would say that most truly modern looking bathrooms try to minimize busy-ness and go for clean lines and would tend to NOT want contrasting grout. Contrasting grout with white tile is also a classic look too, especially with subway tile, but also with 4x4 tile that you find in a lot of vintage baths as well. Grey is the "classic" probably because there wasn't any choice in a cement product back in the day. That said, you need to ask yourself whether you want to call attention to the lines between the tiles or you just want something with less pattern. I have both in my house now - in the kitchen I went with white grout and it's a very subtle look. I love it for in there but wanted something different for the bathroom. I was VERY nervous about contrasting grout but it turns out that I really love that look too. Here's a look at them side by side - both subway tiles. They sell grout saws at home centers. Maybe $5? Takes a bit of time but they work. A mechanical tool, like a dental pik, has been mentioned by some as well. Helps pull out the pieces. Caulk next time. You can get color and texture matched caulk. Mongo

When I look at vintage houses, I think there are always things that I would never choose myself if I were building a new house, or if I have to replace something. But if there are there and they are in good shape, I would live with them and try to like them for what they are. I would never pick out the elaborate pillar and arch style cabinet doors in the kitchen and other areas of this house, but I wouldn't take them out either. The bathroom I am renovating now is bathroom #2 for that space. It was poorly done in 2000 subway tile style with pedestal sink. (Style is fine, handsome sink, not quite right for the house). There was a crack in the plumbing that could be accessed only by making a hole in the floor of this bathroom, so the whole thing is demo'd. Evidence shows that the original original was white tile with gold sparkles with a gold and black mosaic floor, unknown fixture color, maybe gold. I could as it turns out, replicate the tile in this bathroom (Daltile Golden Granite tile for the white with gold sparkles, and Daltile Keystones porcelain mosaic in Luminary Gold and Black.) The fixtures would have to be black or white, but it would be the original color scheme. I am not going to do that. If it was still here and in good shape I might keep it, but I am not going to duplicate it. But I am going to try and do something that looks like it could possibly be original--just not gold and black.

I know this is an old thread. I'm comtemplating if I want a tub at all but if I get an air or a jetted tub, if the sides have stone around, how do you reach the motor if you need a repair? Just curious if anyone has dealt with that situation. For my current outdated tub, I can reach the motor through the the cabinet; I have a cut out there. I could do the same thing. But adding a slab of quartz to a tub make for a very expensive tub. Dominique, what did you decide and are you happy with your decision?
