Rabbits eat hostas.

Rabbits will eat Hosta. I'm battling with them now.

Two minutes ago, I could have taken a picture of a rabbit chomping on my hosta!

We have slugs that eat hostas right down to the stems!

For us in CA, it's snails and slugs. Slugs can be very small, colored like the earth, and can be hard to detect. Sluggo works but you have to be diligent about putting it out regularly. I've completely given up on hostas even though they are pretty.

Deer. I spray them weekly (okay - my yard man sprays them!) with a special deer repellant, but the deer got them last night. Normally, they leave the hostas with big fancy leaves alone. Not this time - they must have made quite a meal on those big leaves. I'm furious - my front garden looked SO nice and now it looks moth-eaten, to mix metaphors.

This all started when the CC at the end of my street (about 1/2 mile away) started selling off the woods between our subdivision and the golf course. Now, the deer don't have enough vegetation so they ravage the neighborhood. Game and Wildlife says the herd should be thinned, but we have some animal rights people in our neighborhood and they have vocally opposed this. It would have to be a controlled kill - done with bow and arrow from stands in the woods.

I spend a fortune trying to keep my front garden looking nice and then those danged deer get it. They think the repellent spray is just "salad dressing". Did I mention that they use my front grass for a toilet after they finish their meal? Deer poop everywhere!

In my atrium I have snails that have come in on plants apparently and they definitely chomp on certain plants. Plus they make slime trails all over my professionally cleaned windows! Ugh

Thankfully no deer or bunnies in the atrium lol. Although Mia might like a bunny friend.

Snails and slugs here, too, BUT there's a safe preventive measure. Sprinkle used coffee grounds all around the earth area around your Hostas. Not only do the coffee grounds deter snails and slugs...the grounds are good for the health of the soil and plants. Since I employed this method...I've had nary a slimy creature and my Hostas are big and healthy.

Rabbits and possibly deer. I swore there were no deer around until I found footprints in the flower bed.

Would need a picture to understand what sort of damage, before guessing at the critter.

Thanks everyone. I guess it must be rabbits but I will check for slugs. I will try the spray to deter them. Luckily my neighbor has absolutely beautiful lush flowers that I can enjoy when sitting on my patio. I have lived in this house for 6 years and could always count on the hosta to add some green to the yard. Never had even a leaf disturbed.

I use coarsely crushed egg shells from the time they break thru the ground and ever other week so so thruout the summer.....never have a slug issue.

This year,due to the almost everyday rain we have had,we are having an issue with earwigs....and I "thought" I might have a ground hog or rabbit after my hosta.....so,after every rain,I sprinkle diatomateous earth on all of my plants-so far,its' working.

We have a pool and use diatomaceous earth in our filter. To prevent slugs from eating my hosta I just run a thin line of diatomaceous earth around each hosta bed. Solves the problem.

I have used rabbit repellent and it did keep the bunnies away. You have to spray it at the various stages of growth. Hostas are like a salad bar to bunnies and deer.
