I don't know what's more exciting - getting new plants, or actually having enough knowledge to know what they are before you bring them home! Thanks for the confirmations - I've learned so much at this forum!

Anytime you see black leaves, think too much water. First, to try to save the plant, move it to sunlight..a western or southern exposure would be recommended. If you believe you have indeed overwatered, then you have to unearth it to inspect the roots. Plants need water only when they need it....not when you decide to water it. Even when you faithfully don't water too much, maybe what you have given it is too much. Once the plant is out of the pot, inspect the roots for signs of rotting. Put your nose to it. Does it smell gunky...do any of the roots come away easily. If this is the case, wash all the soil off around the roots. Re-pot using fresh potting soil (or a soiless mix) and be sure to put something between the drainage holes and the soil. Shards of clay, stones of size, are just two things...and there are many other things you can choose, to keep the soil away from plugging up the drainage holes. Houseplants must drain after every watering, then allowed to dry down between. On the stairwell. Lots of light...but not direct light. That speaks for light from a fluorescent or incandescent light bulb up on the ceiling. Not good enough. Light from a non-natural light source must be within 6 - 8 inches of the top of the plant to be effective. Move the plant to natural light however what room it goes into. Maybe you put it on the stairwell for decorative purposes. Unfortunately, your plant does not have your house's decor in mind to live its life. It needs light to survive. Light and proper watering and food when it is growing. Never feed a plant that is not growing or is sick. If you feed the plant, water it first, then feed at reduced rates until mid February/March when light levels return. If you just cant bring yourself to tkae the plant away from how it improves the look of the stairwell, think artificial. There are any number of real plants that look exceptional --but are plastic. Michaels and their ilk, have many plants that you will fall in love with and can do wonders for home decor.

Oh wow I did not see any responses here at the beginning and just saw all the responses. I have already cut all the brown leaves, I will jut out the brown parts on the fresh leaves as well. Will move away from sun light and try the watering advice given. I will research on the feeding part, I think something is wrong with the nutrients, will watch these video now. It's awesome! It's perfectly normal for a specimen of its' age in a pot inside. The foliage near the top could be a bit sparse from being above the window, getting less light. Sorry for the delayed reply, errand day yesterday. There's a bunch of pics of older plants here: http://allthingsplants.com/plants/view/76304/Corn-Plant-Dracaena-fragrans/ Even in a 3-story atrium, the lower parts of the trunks become naked over time, as older leaves are lost, similar to the growth of any large tree. Whenever a trunk becomes too tall, it can be cut where one would like to see a new side branch. New growth usually comes from a spot near the cut. So, the lower the cut is made, the more room a new branch has to grow before getting too tall again. Sticking the cut piece(s) back in the pot can help yield a more full look, but trying to hide the trunks isn't necessary, under the umbrella of "normal" but perfectly fine if that's just what you prefer to look at. If you go in the house plant forum and search for Dracaena within that forum, you'll also see tons of other, similar discussions, with many more pics. If none of this is appealing, you can "make" your own new plant from this one. Cut off the pieces that are the most attractive to you, stick them in a pot, pushing the trunks all the way to the bottom of the pot so they will be sturdily upright. Using an uneven number, cut to different heights, would yield an instantly bushy-looking "new" plant. Some of the existing leaves are usually discarded when doing cuttings like that, but I've never had one fail to take root and start growing great new leaves within a few months. A nursing home or university would probably love to have the rest of it, if you prefer that idea & want to ditch the stump/root ball. Keep asking questions (here or in house plants,) if you have more of them, until you feel confident & can decide on a plan that's right for what you want to end up with.
