I used to have a faux finish business, and know quite a bit about paint. I would lightly sand, remove sanding dust. Then prime with a high solids white primer like Zehrung Z-prime. Top coat with high-quality paint such as Benjamin Moore AURA. It shouldn't be terribly difficult.

I'd use a spray gun..... and B. M Aura, after the above steps. Take the hardware off, cart them out to the garage : ) Have at it

If he doesn't own one,this project will pay for a RA sander.

What is a RA sander? There are 10 doors. The Aura paint is $60/gallon, don't sprayers use more paint to get full coverage vs hand painting? Just going off of hear-say though, we've never used a sprayer.

RA sander= random-orbitial. It rotates a 5 inch sanding disk while osolating back and forth. Disks are available from 36 grit that quickly remove's blistered paint or smooth's weathered wood,down to 220 grit for glass smooth results. Does the work of 4 people hand sanding and has a hook up for shop vac. Spraying use's almost twice as much paint as brushing.

Are the doors flat, raised panel etc? Real wood, smooth or textured?

He actually hung them up in the garage with no protection/drop cloth or anything and sprayed the heck out of them. It looks like a paint can exploded in the garage! It's even on the overhead lights!

Might be best to replace as those are not too expensive. Problem is hanging the new ones. You would want the hinge mortises to line up.

Doors sometimes are marked on the top edge with brand/model info.

Covering with white is not the problem, it's painting over what's there. They might clean up and look fine, but it sounds like the black was poorly applied.

Sorry I didn't put that info in my original post, I figured the sanding would take care of the sticky & peeling paint. Can you explain why that's a game changer? I'm all for replacing them vs painting, so hopefully your insight will help sway the hub too.

If the paint is peeling and sticky the original surface was not properly primed and prepped, anything you add to it will not stay, will not dry, and/or will look terrible. It's possible/actually probable that he put latex on top of oil paint. I agree, it would be much easier to replace the doors. They come pre-primed. You'll need 2 coats of a satin or semi-gloss latex paint. I prefer Benjamin Moore. Easy peasy. Sadly, a lot of homeowners do something like this when they are getting ready to sell.

Hi Scarlett,long time no see,you are right on every point. amwiggins,aka op,we are now at a crossroads where you are thinking about telling the painter (hubs) how to do his job and that's a mine field. In the interest of marital bliss I recommend approaching this similar to a cat getting into water. Have hubs take one of the worst doors to Sherwim Williams or other paint store "NOT A BIG BOX",and ask if they are salvageable. I'm dead serious,painting doors is not worth "I told you so" when two people want to live under the same roof. If hubs wanted my advice,he would ask for it. Don't ask how I know. ):

Lol I won't ask how you learned that lesson klem1! I would definitely be helping him paint if that's what we decided on. I just wanted to know what it required to do the job right.

Considering I'd be fixing doors in between nap times and after bed time... gotta weigh our pros and cons. (We wouldn't take them all on at one time!) I'd hate to shell out money to slap on some paint to realize it's shotty and we end up buying new doors, ya know?

Yep, that looks and sounds like latex over oil. You could try to salvage by cleaning them up, sanding everything you can until no paint comes off anymore, and if needed stripping the parts where he piled it on too thick. Latex paint can take a long time to cure, it's possible it is still drying. All I know is if I faced this problem in my home, my boyfriend would be at the store picking up new doors. Of course, I would have to paint them (he does everything but paint), but much easier than trying to fix these. Sorry!

I want to comment that there are no problems with latex/acrylic/water born coatings applied over a cured oil based coating.

If you do buy new doors, even if they are pre-primed, I'd inspect and repair any damage, clean and prime. Then 2 coats of paint.
