What to hang on the wall?

Hello!

Wanting to get some advice/thoughts on wall hanging accents. I would like to redo what's hanging on either side of the mirror in our living room. To me, the framed pieces are too small for such a big wall. I'm just not sure exactly what pieces should replace these. Any ideas? I hope these photos help. Thanks in advance!

The room could benefit from less fussy, small scale wall decor.

I would remove the framed pictures and lower the candle sconces just a little bit. And put candles in the holders. Then stand back and see if that's enough.

I know how hard can be to choose something to have there. From what you describe, an abstract painting would go nice there, but here is another idea. Over my living room sofa, I have a big gold mirror (35x42) with two other small sunburst mirrors (12x12, and 9x9) it looks great, but I just had a custom made mirror-window, in wood and black ( 32x42) for my dining room, and I like it so much that I am thinking about switching it with the big mirror over my living room sofa. I think the mirror-window would look great in your space. I had seen it in stores, but not exactly as I wanted it, but you can find it online. I would also suggest if you are not really sure, get any type of mirror. canÃÂ´t go wrong with a mirror!! Let me know what you think. Good luck!!

Orange/rust adds a lot more of the same color that the wood already brings into the house. I'd look for something with a little more contrast. I think green would look nice, or a shade of blue. But the colors in your home are so neutral that any color you want would work. I would start with what I want to put on the wall and then select a color based on that.

Don't buy anything until you try the simple route first. Remove the stairwell gallery and the stuff on top of your kitchen cabs. Try clearing the countertops a bit. How many pets do you feed? Can they eat together and stay friends? Organize one pet feeding/watering station outside the living area if possible. I see three huge bowls in the floor and they are a trip hazard as well as being unsightly if your furry friends don't eat every bite. Address the clutter in your TV center as well. Try 1/3 books, 1/3 larger decor items and 1/3 open space in the shelves.

Window esp. if sitting by it -- blackout cellular shades for 1st layer, and curtains over. Or vice versa, light filtering shades and heavy blackout curtains. Top goes down / bottom up is good for privacy, etc....

Do you especially like or have some sentimental attachment to the three items up there - the mirror, the sconces, and the matching pictures? If not, I would start with a clean slate. IMO, they are too staid for the cool, retro vibe of the lamps, side tables and other items in the room.

Or, if you love the mirror, I would place it on the left over the sofa and add something to the right 3/4 of the space above the sofa. And lower it as in the photo above.

I would move the mirror and sconces to where the painting is above the chair and put that painting over the couch, over to one side, with the framed pics stacked one above the other next to it. You might be able to use the little round pieces (can't tell what they are) with the paintings over the couch, too.

The easiest thing to do for arranging is to cut out paper or cardboard templates the size and shape of your pieces, then tape them to the walls in possible arrangements until you hit on the perfect one.

I think we need the answer to graywings' question first. If you're set on keeping all four items, they need to be lowered and closer together. If you're open to a clean slate, some framed art that's about 2/3 to 3/4 the width of the sofa would work. It needs to be no more than 6 to 8 inches above the sofa.

Lower the mirror and scounces and take away the framed art.

Thanks for your thoughts! So overall, move down the mirror and sconces. I do prefer the mirror over the couch mainly because I like seeing the painting when you walk in the front door. I'm not too attached to the framed pictures so I could take away or replace them. Do you think leaving only the mirror and sconces on the wall is fine for this being the most wall space? It won't appear too bare?

HI -- Less bigger is better instead of all iddy bittys all in a row and up too high . Find another spot for the mirror and find a nice big square painting or long low rectangle painting . Hang all the smaller items with the others items on that other wall . I love your lamps ... they are great !
