Jack and the giant bean stalk!
Comments (5)Others may disagree, but I wouldn't bother thinning. I always plant in way higher concentrations than the packet instructions say and my beans always do fine. Do expand your chicken wire though. Higher and wider. When they get to the top, you can start training them to spread horizontally, but you don't want to do that at the 3' level where it looks like you are right now. There's way too much growing left for that. And enjoy! Pole beans are my favorite in the garden. They're pretty when they start flowering, hearty and yummy!...See MoreSomething is cutting my pole bean leaves and stalks :(
Comments (6)I don't see any cutworms thanks for the info! I tried a spray last night to use on the perimeter and the rabbits still got their midnight snack! So I will be getting a fence today. They also got 2 of my cucumber plants that started to grow. They haven't touched the bush beans. Is there a list somewhere so I can fence all the vegetables the rabbits will eat? I don't want to fence the whole garden if I don't have to :) Thank you so much again tj! Rachael :)...See MoreNEW: November's Beans, beans, beans swap

I don't have very many varieties yet, but beans are what got me started on heirlooms." and "I was so excited to see the bubble envelope in the mail today, but .... nothing left inside but my list. :-(" Now that there is a damn shame, as they say. I would be more than happy to share some of my bounty from this swap. Mchill320 did an awesome job, and it will be years before I could grow them all. If interested, send me your mailing info (and your wish list, if you want) and I'll see what I can do. Rick This post was edited by rdback on Mon, Jan 13, 14 at 15:57...See MoreRetama tree seed pods
Comments (30)I have not planted the seeds so I have no personal experience. Here is what Jill Nokes ( How to Grow Native plants of Texas and the Southwest) says. " Retama seeds require no pre treatment in order to germinate. However germination rates are higher if the seeds are soaked in hot water (100ºƒ) for 1 minute (Bestt 1999). Adding Superdrive to the cooling water also proved beneficial to the grower. Germination will occur in2-3 weeks if soil temperatures are warm. Plant in individual containers at least 8" deep to occomadate a long taproot. Use a well draining mineral soil mixture. Seedlings will be ready to transplant in 1 gallon container when they are 4" tall.. Retama is fast growing and will make a 5 gallon plant next spring. To promote optimum growth; place in strong sunlight and fertilize regularly. Retama has greater survival rates if grown in containers that provide root air pruning." I really recommend Jill Nokes book. It is a classic. Retama will also grow from semi hard wood cuttings taken in summer treated with IBA and placed under intermittent mist....See Moreroselee z8b S.W.
