Rustic modern cabin: what to do with the walls?
Comments (20)That is very cool juliekcmo, thanks. Mtn, too funny. I've actually gone so far as to discuss whether I should go back to school and become an architect with an architect neighbour of mine. I'm not sure if my math is strong enough, and I'm not sure DH would approve at this particular juncture! But I'd love to. Yes, I just discovered the building forum, it is wonderful. I'm really impressed with the generosity and knowledge of the men/women there. Pal - maybe I could. It is a rural area, I'm not sure how much expertise there is around with plaster. Although my city is nearby, I live in a separate province from the cottage, and tradespersons from my province can't freely work in Quebec (where I'm building). But there must be someone, I will ask around. I have no idea at all how much more expensive that might be over drywall or pine board....See Moredecorating a rustic farmhouse/Cabin style home
Comments (27)Here is a home with a mix of white and wood trim - I would leave the beautiful trim wood, but if there are rooms with cheaper wood trim, those could go white. https://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sale/Pacific-Grove-CA/fsba,fsbo,fore,cmsn_lt/pf,mmm_pt/house_type/19323966_zpid/33300_rid/globalrelevanceex_sort/36.65933,-121.861554,36.568252,-121.980858_rect/12_zm/? If you have solid wood doors, don't paint them, though do what you like to hollow core or MDF doors. Wood with white trim is a pretty combo: Painted wood panel doors can be a pain to upkeep - the painted door show more scratches and the wood moves with changes in temp and humidity causing hairline cracks at the joints. Wood paneled doors are classic - less susceptible to changes in paint / style trends I have a similar kitchen which I did in a vintage style without painting the cabinets. I used the Kohler Whitehaven "short apron" style farm sink which can be installed on a standard sink base cabinet: https://www.houzz.com/photos/my-pics-work-in-progress-phvw-vp~93784356 https://www.houzz.com/photos/my-pics-work-in-progress-phvw-vp~93784291 If you don't want to do a farm sink, but give the feel of one, curtain the sink base. This is my basement kitchenette which I put together with some of my original kitchen cabinets (refinished) and my old cast iron sink. https://www.houzz.com/photos/my-pics-work-in-progress-phvw-vp~65270573 Some inexpensive ideas for decor are vintage china plates (I spent less then a few dollars on many of mine), botanical art, floral art and vintage finds....See MoreMountain Cabin needs updating, help with choosing paint please!
Comments (31)The tone of your cabinets is going to play a major role in choosing the right paint. Take a cabinet door with you to the paint store (not the home store) and ask for their color matching expert to help you pick exactly the right off white. Just buy sample pots of the colors you find and get some big white poster board. Paint a square or rectangle of color in the middle of each board. The white boarder will help keep your current paint color from distorting the sample. Move the boards around in different light, times of day and night and weather conditions to find the one that stays the way you want it to look all the time. When you go back to buy it, find a compatible white to do the ceilings that are looking rather dingy. The paint specialist will be your best friend....See MoreNew Mountain Cottage Build- Exterior Colors and Materials?
Comments (4)(not a pro) It might help others help you if you also post some pics of what "rustic charm" looks like to you. But 2 cents from a non-pro until some pros chime in: I love the look of a sage green cabin I prefer your exteriors without the decorative pediment in the left gable (just over the door to draw attention there) Would you consider using natural cedar for the front pillars and pediment? Cedar is a good exterior wood (pros please correct me if wrong) and looks so great with green siding IMO...See Morekooopons
